Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bugsy ,my 8 year old bunny, has a horrid eye infection at the moment.

He's had his tear ducts flushed (although they couldnt do it properly due to the infection) and has been on baytril and fucithalmic eye drops for 3 days now.

Today his eyes are much worse....the worst one was badly stuck together with pus and the other one had a pocket of pus in the corner which I had to wipe away .....despite treatment they seem much worse and I intend to take him back to the vets tomorrow.

My question is should it be responding to the treatment by now and is there anything else I can ask to try for it?

I seldom have any luck with Baytril for severe nasolacrimal duct infections, especially those related to tooth root elongation.
My effected Buns responded very well to a combination of Depocillin Injections aswell as Fucithalmic or Tiacil.

A culture and sensitivity test (swab) would identify the bacteria involved and thus the most appropriate abx to use.

Would the vet be likely to try any other sort of antibiotic before injections are suggested?...I just want to be prepared!...the thought of me injecting him makes me feel quite squeamish

There are others that can be given orally. A change of eye drops may be tried too :)

What about Pen G? Usually w/ infection like this, a stronger ABX is needed. Pen. G for 7 days would be a good idea. Regardless, 3 days is too soon for any ABX to cure or see reasonable effect on eye infection.

Well I'm just back from the vets ,we have Septrin and Tiacil drops and have to go back on thursday......if the septrin isnt having any effect then I'll need to learn to inject so that he can have penicillin injections .

She tried to flush his tear ducts again but it wasnt very sucessful and one of them is now bleeding a little.....poor Bugs :(

Thanks Jane...I hope so too.....he can have metacam too,I'd given him 2 drops last night because they looked so sore but the vet gave me the right dosage today so he can have 4 drops,he really doesnt love me much at the moment!

Eddie's eyes were terrible and he did well with Engemycin injections. At least they only need to be given every 3 days so might be easier for you :)

I'm frustrated now....Bugs has been on septrin for nearly 4 weeks now ,his eyes have been brilliant for over a week, not needed to bathe at all but obviously have kept up with Tiacil and septrin as per vets instructions.

Ive just been and given him his eye drops and his left eye was horrid, gummed together, lots of pus and red again :(

Is he likely to have a bad eye forever ,getting better and worse , or do you think I need to change treatment again??

Poor bugs :( Did you manage to have a C and S test done?

As I said before Eddie did well for quite some time on Engemycin injections, although he has now changed to a combination of Metronidazole and Septrin :)

So will Eddie be on treatment forever do you think??

I've not had swabs done, the vet hadn't suggested it ,he seemed to be doing so well on the septrin I really thought it had cleared the infection up :(

He was due to finish the septrin on easter monday.

Eddie will, but his problems are probably much more severe than Bugs. He is also on ceporex every day and metacam twice daily, not something I would recommend for all bunnies. But in eddie's case if he wasn't on 3 antibiotics everyday he would have been dead in january :( we just take each day as it comes and worry about side effects when and if they happen.

I'm sure Bugs will not have as many problems,:) Eddie has also had major surgery with an eye specialist in Cambridge so not your average bunny eye problems

Ah ok .....well I shall give Bugs another day,see if bathing it again helps and will go to the vets on saturday if its not getting any better ,does that sound sensible?

I'm sure it will be fine, most vets are shut tomorrow anyway.

It is possible that he may have flair ups with his eye on and off so maybe getting a culture done would be beneficial :)

Thanks Liz.....I think I'm going to need to get a culture done for Angels snuffles ...do you think I'll get discount for 2 lots??

If your rabbit is on antibiotics, a culture is unlikley to yeild any signinicant results. Ideally you need to be off the septrin for about a week. I would be considering the possibility that this rabbit has a tear duct obstruction causing pooling and subsequent re infection. The obstruction may be caused by scarring from a previous episode of dacrocystitis (tear duct inflammation) or by an elongated tooth root. If you wish a culture to be carried, out i would consider stopping the septrin, salt water bathing and giving the correct metacam dose if this were my rabbit. However, i would also if this were my rabbit be considering head xrays +/- contrast dacrocystography (injecting an opaque dye down the tear duct to look for an obstruction)
Goodluck

If I stop bathing and antibiotics and the infection takes hold again like it was a few weeks ago then he won't be able to open his eyes, that doesnt seem very kind to me although I can see where you're coming from with regard to the antibiotics and I certainly dont want to waste money on a swab if its pointless.
