  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Molly's sore hocks AGAIN

Hiya

Right, I had decided to leave them alone about 2 weeks ago after the sudocream was just making her feet redder and not helping at all. We gave her thicker bedding and checked her feet regularly. They were getting better, lovely and pink and some fur was growing back. But now, the fur that had grown back has gone and there are patches where it sort of goes in a bit and is quite flaky and scaly. Still pink everywhere, but I don't know what to do. I can't put cream on without putting bandages on. Should I bandage her feet and put some flazminine cream (although I can't get any, so don't know where I'll get it from) or some honey like MissySJ suggested before, so some sort of other cream? Should I use a pressure-reliving bandage? Or should I just trial and error? She looks to be a little uncomfortable with her feet because she sit to the outside of her hock, and hair is going from this side too. I can't take her back to the vets cos they'll just say it's fine and to keep an eye on it. (they've said this before, and they were worse than now). I've been really teary as I don't want to lose her, but I feel like I don't know what to do for the best. Is this going to be an ongoing problem, and will she have it the whole of her life? She's a happy bunny, but I want to sort it out.

Take her to a different Vet to get a second opinion.
It sounds as though she is now in pain and its not fare to just 'wait and see'.
Flamazine has to be obtained via a Vet.
There have been examples of bandaging given on your other threads.
If you bandage without being 100% certain that there is no infection it will make matters very much worse.

But this vet is the best rabbit specialist vet around. I don't think I could persuade my parents to find another vet again.

Agreed.
Your vet obviously doesn't know how to efficiently deal with the problem.
By leaving her, you are in a sense causing her pain.

But this vet is the best rabbit specialist vet around. I changed vet from our old one who's not rabbit savvy for this particular problem. Was told this vet is a very good rabbit vet so I trust him.

Cos this vet is quite far away, so I don't want to be making my parents go to and from the vets just for them to say it's fine and not to come back unless it's bleeding, got calluses (?) or weeping etc.

What do you want us to say?
If Molly is showing signs of discomfort, as you claim in your first post, then she needs pain relief at the very least. If you are actually noticing the signs then the pain must be significant. She will be doing her best to hide it, being a prey animal.

But it's not inflamed, it's a healthy pink. Does that make a difference? I can squeeze, press and touch it without her flinching at all.

I'm confused too :? Are you sure that the particular vet you saw is the rabbit savvy one?? There's only 1 rabbit savvy vet at the practice I take my lot to, and If I have a special bunny problem (Biscuit's teeth) then I ask to see Michelle. If it's a regular problem (Biscuit's tear ducts) that I'm confident a regular vet can deal with then I just make a normal appointment with whoever.

I've no experience with sore hocks, but I know it's a common problem in rexes. I'm sure everyone will give you advice AGAIN and you'll post up AGAIN next week asking the exact same question AGAIN

Why is it so hard? Why does she have to have sore hocks? Milly doesn't.

I'm afraid you never know what will happen with keeping rabbits. I didn't want Wesley to get suspected EC but it happened. You just need to work with your vet or get a new vet to get it sorted.

Ok, it's a healthy pink, but what changed is that fur has gone and there's a little red line (sort of a cut, but not bleeding etc). But they are going to see the vet for their vaccs in the next couple of weeks anyway, so I'll see what he thinks then. The vet I see is the rabbit-savvy one.

Take her back to the vets and tell the vet that you are not happy with her progress and what is being done and you would like to try something different. Remember *you are paying them* so they have to try something and not just say 'leave it and see' if you are in doubt about her treatment.

It's not good for her or you to be worrying about it if the vet is just trying to fob you off!

She looks to be a little uncomfortable with her feet because she sit to the outside of her hock, and hair is going from this side too

If she is uncomfortable and therefore is more than likely to be in pain SHE NEEDS TO SEE A VET.

Is this going to be an ongoing problem, and will she have it the whole of her life?

It is more than likely that this will be an ongoing problem. If you look at your website http://www.freewebs.com/bestrabbitinformation/breedsofrabbits.htm you already have acknowledged that sore hocks are a problem for Rex Rabbits. Please follow the advise you have put on http://www.freewebs.com/bestrabbitinformation/illnessesdiseases.htm where you say that you need to get cream from your vet to treat the area,
