  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi, I found a small lump on the back of Audrey's neck a week ago and took her to the vets. I assumed it was the result of a nip during the failed bonding a couple of weeks before and I had just missed it. Anyway Audrey has been on antibiotics all week and I took her back today. The vet (different one this time) said that it is tracking but he is not sure if it tracking up from her ear or down. There is some gunk in her ear but he can't see what this is. She has another week of antibiotics and needs her abcess cleaning out daily and is to go back in a week. He was very cagey about outcomes and I have no eperience with rabbit abcesses but if it started in her ear it doesn't sound good at all. It sounds too close to her brain for my liking:shock:. Am I right to worry? He said if it is from the nip it will go but what if it is in her ear???? Any thoughts for a worried bunnymum?

hiya,im doin the same at the mo with one of my bunnies, she had her abcess lanced on thursday and i have to wash it out twice a day, give her an injection every two days and oral meds everyday, this is the first time ive had to treat an abcess,my bunnie has to go back on the 3rd of april to see the vet again, not sure wat they will say...fingers crossed it will be ok..

I have never dealt with an abscess on a bun but many on my pigs, they need antibiotics for quite a period of time and if you can keep the hole open so it drains, if it is a deep abscess it might need surgically removing.

Good luck, hope they clear up real soon xxx

hiya

My bunny bless him has been through abscess hell this past year with an abscess that keeps returing in his ear  He has had it surgically removed 3 times in the past year but finally (touch wood) we seem to have got on top of it with clear results from his skull xray. If left untreated it can track into their ear canal causing balance problems (which was what happened to molly). My vet advices surgery along with long term antibiotic treatment depending on culture tests. I found that lancing the abscess didn't help as it just came back a couple of weeks later. If in doubt, speak to another vet or ring around and go and discuss the different options. :)
