Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

matted fur...

hi,

i got a new bun yesterday, a partner for millie! i got him from a rescue and took millie with me so she could choose her husbun. Well the one she choose is a young fellow and he literally came into the rescue the evening before. His previous owners had a male an female both unaltered that had resulted in lots of litters that were not cared for very well.

Inspite of this my new chap is great, lovely little character so far and is healthy...except for his fur on his back has got lots of small balls of matted fur.:?
I tried brushing them out but had to stop in fear it was hurting his delicate bunny skin. Should i just carefully cut the matts out? Anyone dealt with this before?

Lots of repeated gentle strokes with a slicker brush may pull them free if it excess moult that has just tangled into his other fur. Nigel's moult forms dreds and he gets matts in his dewlap because he's always in the garden putting his face in everything.
If they won't move then trimming them should take them out, but it should probably be a two person operation to stop him moving unexpectedly and poking himself on the scissors. :)

If he is well behaved as you hold him, try teasing them out a little with your fingers before you use the slicker. You will find you can stop the skin pulling that way.

If you need the curved scissors for trimming, lots on e-bay for a cheapo price.
