  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

P@H Vets

My aunt also took her cat to one and they made the wrong diagnosis.

i took my hamster into one when i was at uni - they were insistant he was a girl - funny..... as he had very clearly been a boy for the previous 18months!!!:oops:

Aww I'm so sorry thats awful!:cry:

Isn't looking to good at the mo P@H Vets - just tryin to find one I'm happy with for my 2 Rabbits!

Thanks Sooz - I'll have to look into it more.

Anyone kno of any vets in Rochdale that are good with Rabbbits??

How's Rory? Only been aon here today so didn't see the thread! Lots of Vibes x

The problem with Companion Care is that they are franchised. The surgeries trade under the name of CC but are actually not part of a 'chain'. So the experience, methods and level of care are not goverened by a central HQ.

Basically what you experience at one may not be true of the others.

I'm sure they are not all like the one I went to.....hope not!
Some vets are only good with cats and dogs. I think you just need to phone around a few and ask if they are used to treating rabbits or not.

I'd agree with the others - the quality of care is pretty much down to the individual vet/s. I've recently moved to the CC practice here after my old practice got taken over by medivet and I'm really really happy with the care I receive, both for the rabbits and the cats. But equally I have heard the opposite so you really do need to satisfy yourself that you are happy with the specific vet/s who will treat your animals.

One of the big advantages I find with CC is that they are open 7 days a week so apart from being more convenient generally, there is less chance you'd need to use an expensive emergency clinic!

At the CC local to me (derby store) there was a lady vet that was really bad with my buns, she let treacle jump off the table then left her on the scales to type her weight in to the computer, so she jumped into the sink.
On the other hand there is a male vet, can't remember his name, who is great with them.
Thankfully she has left and I always ask for him now.

So mixed.

A good vet is invaluable i rang round alot of vets before going to the one i use now, they are slightly more expensive because but they are very worth it, they have been brilliant with my buns and are very good at giving advice, when i first went there i felt like i was being interiorgated!! They makesure you know what you are doing with your buns which i like. :D

the one near me was recomending keeping rabbits and guinea pigs together...saying that i've activly avoided the entire company for a few years maybe they have made a few improvments.

".....Some vets are only good with cats and dogs. I think you just need to phone around a few and ask if they are used to treating rabbits or not.".....

agreed. don't be afraid to ask questions.

Went to Companion Care twice (before I knew better). First time they diagonsed what I later realised was onset of chronic EC as something needing stomach surgery (I knew enough to remove rabbit rapidly); second time they diagnosed 'jelly droppings' in a young rabbit as 'nothing to worry about - bring it back in 48 hrs'. Fortunately I panicked enough to find a REAL rabbit vet. Tht was 8 years ago so they may have improved . . .

Except I've just remembered - last year when I took on Blackberry as a 14 week old who had had a severe EC attack with head tilt and a 'burst eye' appearing overnight (you know when the parasite gets through the eye); he had been in a pet shop next to Companion Care so the pet shop had taken him there first thing that morning and they had said he had had a 'stroke' and given him a huge dose of steroids - (no panacur, etc)

However as Soozz says - they are franchise :(

Hmm yeh i really am on the fence about advising against guinea pigs and rabbits, i had them together when i was younger and never had a problem, they adored eachother. However it now seems they are not suitable to be kept together, i still am not convinced.

My vets have about 3 surgeries down here, they are called unicorn vets and have 24 hour emergency care. Definetely have a phone round, ask lots of questions, you'll find a vet you like the sound of, some just sound so unprofessional you can tell when they dont really know what they are talking about when it comes to bunnies

Which bit are you not convinced about? Diet, companionship, injury, hormonal behaviour, bullying or bordetella? :)

I use the local companion care vets and they are very very good.

They were excelent when Delilah Do was ill and a lot of the work was done free of charge.

I use them for all the rescue bunnies and GPs

They have a rabbit specialist, and another vet that does cats and dogs.

The CC vets near to me is brilliant.... there are several really good vets there as well as several vet nurses who are in the RWA and love bunnies :D If you cant find another member near to you try ringing your local rabbit rescue and ask what vet they use. When i moved here i asked Cheryl who runs the local rabbit rescue and she used the CC vets so thats why i went there.. they get loads of bunnies and guinea pigs going in so are very experienced :D
