  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

After neutering - balls?

Sandra

Hi, staying up with our new bun Edward - he was neutered yesterday and is still not eating, pooing or peeing... I have given him metacam and syringe fed him bio-lapis for rabbits etc. but he is still not showing any interest in food - it is now 14 hours since I picked him up from the vets:( Please send some good vibes for Eddie (he is 7 months old and has so far spent all his life in a small cage in a loud animal store so we thought it was about time to give him a proper home...)

One question, when he was licking his "former balls" I noticed that it looked like the balls were still there, although "empty", with a small stich on each... like two skin balls hanging - is it supposed to look like that? I thought they took the balls away? (Never saw anything like that on our bun Roger).

Thanks:wave:

Might be an idea to chat with your vet if he's still not eating when they open.

Yes, that's normal. They open them up, pop the insides out and sew them up again :) They'll shrink gradually.

Yep, agree with Tamsin. Give your vet a call and get some herbs etc to try and tempt him.

The skin will shrink back in time.

They may swell a little post op over the next couple of days but as they heal they will resemble deflated balloons which will shrivel and harden until one day you suddenly realise you cannot see them anymore.

Your little chap may need a top up on his pain relief as pain is the primary reason for anorexia in rabbits. He may also benefit from a gut stimulant such a metaclopromide to encourage his GI tract to start moving properly again.
