House rabbit cages

Hi, I'm new. I'm currently looking for a new houserabbit, as we had to put our last one to sleep unfrtunately.

I thought whilst I'm on here I'd best ask.

Where can I find a decent sized indoor cage or hutch for a medium sized rabbit? The cage we currently have is apparently big enough, though I feel it's a bit lacking and boring. A two storey cage would be great, but I can't find any except outdoor hutches and knowing my previous rabbit, everything will get chucked out as there isn't a raised base as it were.

We normally let the last rabbit we had out the vast majority of the time so he gets plenty of excersize and time to socialise and play, so he's not continually cooped up, so it doesn't need to encompass a run as our new rabbit will have a whole bunnyproofed room.

Plus the advantage of a bigger cage means we could expand and find a playmate /girlfriend.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of people use the 48" dog crates on here and add in a shelf to make a second storey. You can also attach a play pen from www.zooplus.co.uk.

There are some pictures on the forum, let me find the links for you.

An 48" crate is good for two rabbits. Dogs crates are good because you can add another storey to it. I don't know much about crates and cages, but many people on here do, so they'll give you better advice. Welcome to the Forum.

Welcome

We use fireguards, bought for £1-£5 each from car boot sales and cabletie them to fit the space. :D Really versatile and fold flat when not in use.

This is our indoor set up for Jaynie - she is out most of the day and evening.

Hope you find your dream rabbit soon, heres a link to a lovely little fella if you haven't already fallen in love! (and we could probably do the bunny run at the end of January ;) )

The best kind of cage is an NIC cage, I'm not sure if you're heard of them? Also known as C&C cages for Guinea Pigs, they make great rabbit cages. Storage grids, available from B&Q which can be built into any kind of cage at all. :D

I've went the dog crate way, hated it, went free roaming, loved that but mum was a bit annoyed that everything was being chewed up :p so went for NIC, which is very popular on the forum where I moderate. :) This is mine;

Personally I hate the rabbit cages sold in pet shops, just a big litter tray with a lid. :(

This is the biggest cage but a dog crate is much better:

This is the cage Bobbin has. I must say I think it's really good. The sides lift up and you can leave it permanently open if needs be. It's 140cm long as opposed to the 48inch dog crate (120cm).

Only down side is it's not as tall as a dog crate, Bobbin is a mini lop and has plenty of head room but a larger bun may not.

Ive got a cage for my buns similar to Bobbins cage! its quite tall and my buns are happy in it :) i just got mine from the local petshop for £55

this was alvins cage using a 36" crate and pen from pets@home. ive now got a 42" crate because the 36 didnt fold flat enough (alvin travels with us so the flatter the better) it gives a floor space of 3.5 foot x 7 foot but when we move ill add pen panels to make it bigger. havent got around to a shelf cus im a bit lazy lolololol

Thanks for all your help guys. I managed to get something similar to the eat Idea Cubes from B&Q. They're £22 odd a box of 24 grids. Only the warehouses stock them.

Hopefully they'll do the job just right.
Cheers

Yes, that's what I used, two full boxes of them to make my cage. :D

Be warned, you might get a bit annoyed at them while you're building, but it's well worth it in the end. :) And best to have a plan of what you're going to make before you start.

I like the idea of these cubes but have only seem them hideously expensive before. I tried looking for them on the B&Q website but the website isn't very good and there are so many storage thingys that I can't find them. Can anyone remember what they are acutally called?

Thanks,
Clare

Yes they arent on the website, I had to wait three weeks for mine to come into the shop after ordering.

Product No: 5015772198409
The make is Slemka. :)

Fortunately they had loads in stock at the B&Q warehouse near me, the normal shops don't stock them. I bought 3 boxes, so far I've used 2 and might have to dip into the third, the cage has a door shaped hole currently. I now have a bunny mansion sitting in my living room. Just need to reinforce the shelves with beams underneath and wood covering the wire, and cover the floor in lino to protect bunny feet. And then furnish it.

Fun stuff though a little frustrating. Just have to wait for the bunnies to arrive in a few weeks time.
