Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Claws

Fae absolutely hates being picked up, and no matter how we try and pick her up she has a mental fit - kicking her bags legs, panting etc..

I need to check her claws and file them, does anyone have any ideas / suggestions for how i can pick her up safely and less stressful for her? She never used to be like this...:?

Thanks

It's not very nice, but could you trance her? It should only be done if absolutely necessary but it would keep her still while you do it.

We've tried that but she struggles so much she just wont go on her back.

I hate doing it as she wheezes and pants alot and she's obviously quite distressed? :(

If you stroke her head and get her to relax like she thinks it's time for a good stroking session, you could then wrap a large towel around her body and kneel on the floor with her between your legs maybe? just allow a paw at a time to poke out of the towel wrap. Really it's a 2 person job if they struggle - one to hold the wrapped up bunny and one to clip claws - I would imagine filing them takes longer and might feel horrible for the rabbit - I use scissor type cutter designed for birds claws as they are really easy to use.

Thanks Elve, this is great info :D Would you still persist even if she starts panting or should it calm down?

Ive had this trouble today aswell trying to get Piper to stay still while i do her claws, i find it usefully to wrap her in a towel and give her a stroke till shes settled! if i just grab her she throws a right hairy fit on me and i end up with some pretty nasty scratchs on me *shows arms*

yeah i was going to say use a towel. i would put it in the cage/hutch for a while before hand so it smells of her so that will calm her a bit as well.
