  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blood Tests

Young Bun
Hi

I've heard blood tests on bunnys can be quite stressful for the bunny -does anyone have any experience of this? Many thanks.

As far as vets procedures go, there are far worse things that they go through conscious.

Its about as stressful as any vet visit involving a needle and certainly not enough to turn down a blood test for a rabbit that needs one.

No I don't think Sooz mean't that, No vet will sedate a rabbit for a the few moments it takes to get the blood. All Sooz mean't was that rabbits go though far worse things, the stress isn't enough to warrent them being sedated. Also it could interfer with the results.

I can't say for certain as my vet always takes my bunny to another room to have the blood taken. But I would imagine that it's not too much more stressful to them than having a vaccination. If a rabbits needs it done it has to be done.

I meant that a blood test is a minor procedure and there are worse procedures that rabbits endure without sedation so a blood test is not problematic.

Its over in seconds.
