  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

i dont know what to do,

bunnyrun

ive had a baby bunny bought to me because his owners were advised by their vet to have him put to sleep because he has malloclusions at the front and his back teeth are not very good either  i saw my vet and my vet has now suggested putting him to sleep:cry:  he,s only 13 weeks she said his jaw is really out of line and its only going to be a matter of weeks before he,ll need a dental :( he,s going to need dentals very regularly,i asked wether they could remove his front teeth and she wasnt keen
i just dont know what to do for the best  he,s only a baby and deserves a chance but if he needs regular dentals every 6 weeks is this fair on him :( he,s very badly interbred

I would probably have him put to sleep. I don't think he'll like to have dentals every six weeks for the rest of his life.

if its only his dentals i would give him a chance, my old bunny had to be done every month, he was the best rabbit i have ever had. If he has other problems it may be worth thing about what kind of quality of life he will have

You might find if you have his front teeth removed and don't give him pellets, he'll eat more hay and grind his back teeth down a fair bit too - although if the vet says his jaw's out of line, he may be beyond help after a while :(

There are so many differnt views on this. Me personally if you can afford it is to give him a chance. Then again its the stress on the poor thing. He might get his teeth done settle down after it all only to be took back for more. You have to ask yourself whether it is actually worth it.

Its down to you at the end of the day to do what you think is best.

Good luck in whatever you decide

Is it possible to have X-rays taken and ask the opinion of the experts at Bristol? Personally I'm such a worrier, I'd forever be worrying about the "what ifs" if I'd not got the second opinion of the top experts.

Good luck

Pringle has had his teeth done 6weeks apart and although they are lively and happy during the 6 weeks then i would not get the bun PTS ...if it lives a happy life then go bunnie!! They may also be times where the bun wont need his teeth done for 8weeks maybe? xx

Hi
Ask another vet for their opinion. I have even heard that bunnies can survive without any teeth, obviously diet would have to be altered to accommodate this. Please correct me anyone if I am wrong.

I have major problems with my bunnies teeth at the moment and want to give him every chance possible. He will have to have his teeth done approx every 6 weeks (he is 4 1/2). I go back to my vet tomorrow to see how he has got on with his anti-biotics.

Good luck.

Poor little guy  I think some bunns are fine having regular dentals, but if his problem is very severe then perhaps it is the kindest thing for him

I wonder if the situation may change when he reaches adulthood :?

Perhaps get a further vet opinion?

It depends on the rabbit. Some might not cope well with the regular stress of it - others won't be as fussed. As it is, you don't yet know if he's likely to suffer badly from stress from it... So, you could wait and see? ^^; It'd be giving him a chance, at least.

I would have to give him a chance if I could. When I rescued Willow he had terrible teeth and was suffering from extreme malnutritian. I had to give him a chance. He's gone from dentals every three weeks to every three months. With correct diet and plenty of care he might improve. I would def get a second opinion anyway as i think too many vets pts far too quickly.

Agreed :)
Its def worth giving him a chance to see how he copes and asking a specialist!

Can only reiterate what's already been said really. Some rabbits teeth do improve with diet but if their jaws are misaligned it is near impossible to do. I have one bun whose teeth are perfect on one side but the left hand side of her jaw isn't aligned properly so she has to have dentals every 6weeks. My vet does it without GA and whilst there are pros and cons in peoples minds about this I do think she fares better not having a GA that often. Is there a vet in your area who might be able to do similar?
