Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fly strike prevention

Bit of a random question but does anyone know if if trimming longish fur near my rabbits bum will decrease the risk of flu strike at all, or make it easier to spot. Although kept very clean and have had fly strike spray, I also keep chickens which means there’s lots of flies around in the summer and makes me very nervous. Both my rabbits are rescues that hate being handled... obviously I still do all necessary grooming/ treatments but try to avoid picking them up all day to check them as makes them avoid me! TIA x

Yes, clipping the fur would be helpful alongside A* husbandry of the environment, using fly netting over hutches/enclosures, doing at least 2 x daily thorough bum checks etc

Can you relocate the Rabbit's accommodation as far away from the Chickens as possible ? As you probably know there is also the risk of Coccidiosis transfer when Chickens are allowed to run with Rabbits.

Great thanks, I wasn’t sure if by trimming his bum if I would make it more accessible to the flies. I have been using beaphar fly guard which says it only needs to be repeated every 3 months... is there any harm in doing it slightly more frequently, e.g every 6 weeks? Also, does anyone use fly traps and know if there any good ?

If you are going to use a topical application then I would not use Beaphar. I'd use this

Which can be purchased from here :

I use Fly strips and Electronic Fly Zappers
