  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can the change in weather cause anything respiratory? UD Page 2

I thought I would update the thread with the outcome of Cookies X rays. A huge sigh of relief there were no visible tumours like Frankie had (That made me cry....again!!!) Infact she said it wasn't too bad at all. There is something, almost in the section between the heart and lungs, I can't remember what part that was. She could see it looks a little bit like inflammation, with tiny little dots?? There is nothing else abnormal she could see whatsoever. She said it could be her age, or something causing a bit of inflammation, so for now she is to have a week of Metacam to try and reduce that. She didn't want to put her on antibiotics, just Metacam and has to go back in a week or ASAP if she gets worse. Does anyone know what that could be?

Would you have pushed for antibiotics aswell as a just incase? I wish I had now. I also forgot to ask if she had a dose of the Metacam already and now it is too late as they have closed. If I gave her some now (she is now on 1ml of dog Metacam and weighs 2.8kg) is there any room to give her extra on that dose/weight? I mean, if the vet gave 1ml earlier, is there tolerance for any extra on that weight if she has dog Metacam?

They let me bring her home as they felt she would do better and they knew I could keep an eye on her (no one is at the surgery at night). She actually hadn't eaten a thing, totally refused. The vet nurse put her hay and kale into her carrier and brought her out to me and put her on the table. After a minute she wolfed down a piece of kale. Then the rest of it in the carrier on the way home. My scaredy bun Cookie, who absolutely HATES travel/vets seemed to wait until I was with her and she felt safe enough to eat  Normally eating is the last thing on their mind when we go there!

She has to go back in the morning if she hasn't pooped for Metaclopromide I think. Which will be tricky as we both have work :( She has eaten a little bit, but seems to want to have a bit of extra TLC and is eating hay better if I hand feed it to her. She has passed a couple of bumbles and done two little wees, just I hope hand feeding her this hay helps.

To top it off this morning when I was packing up her bag, Lola suddenly had her gas tummy emergency thing too. So I had to save her from that at the same time, chasing her around and massaging her tummy. Honestly couldn't have been a worse time!! She is ok again now though.

Thanks so much for updating - I was hoping you would (was just about to PM you!)

I am glad it doesn't look like anything sinister, but it sounds like your mind isn't exactly at rest with what the vet has said. The vet also seems not to give any suggestions of what might cause the inflammation?

Do you know whether her heart looked normal on X-ray?

Regarding the Metacam - you're probably in bed now, but if you PM me I will help you out with dosage etc.

Take care and I'm glad Lola got through her bout OK.

Good luck xx

I hope that Cookie has recovered well overnight ? If the Vet is uncertain of the Xray image findings maybe she could contact an Exotics Specialist for an opinion ? My Vet has done this for a few of my Rabbits. The Specialist looks at the Xray and gives an opinion on what may be going on, you would not have to take Cookie to the Specialist.

Thank you both, sorry to abandon the thread, I've barely had a chance to stop and when I do log on to update today the kids bicker and I have to go and sort them out!

Cookie had eaten her pellets and bumbled more overnight. I don't think she is overly keen on hay now for some reason but is eating it a little bit at a time so I am giving frequent extra top ups wherever she is sat. She is a very lazy bunny most of the day so it is hard to tell how she is until the early hours of the morning (and last night after a very long day I zonked out asleep!), she does seem a little quiet and extra sleepy though but it is hard to say whether that is due to the upset in routine/being handled/medication or just Cookie being Cookie! Dare I say it, her breathing is no worse, and perhaps a teenie weenie bit better, not quite so fast. She is letting me pick her up fairly easily for her Metacam though which is a bit of a concern, she never let's me do that.

The vet said her heart looked ok on the x ray so hopefully she hasn't missed it being enlarged. I wish I could have got a copy of the x rays, they are quite fascinating to look at. She said she may do repeat ones after seeing her at a check up this week if necessary to see any changes so perhaps I can get a copy then.

Yes hopefully she will consult someone else if we can't fully figure it out. Now I think about it I think she may have said the inflamation and dots looked like it was in the breathing tube, but perhaps she said it was near it at the end nearest the lungs. I just can't remember now. We had been at the end of the hay bag and it was a bit dustier, could that have done something? I do still give it a good shake though.

All in all I feel like there is more hope than I originally thought at least. Fingers crossed we can get her through whatever this is!

Well it sounds as though she is reasonably stable at the moment. I hope that her check up this week goes well. I dont think it will help you or Cookie if everyone starts posting 'it might bes' re the Xray findings. It will just add to your anxiety. I am sure the Vet will consult a Specialist if she is unsure of what the Xray film shows. Most Vets do admit to any limitations they may have in their knowledge of specific conditions :) IMO that is part of what makes a good Vet x

Sending lots of vibes for Cookie. Have you got a dehumidifier? I don't have any experience of the problem Cookie is suffering from so I don't know if getting the condensation/humidity out of the air would help

Nice to hear from you again, and you certainly seem to have your hands full with OH, kids and rabbits!

I am glad the heart looked OK on the X-ray. That's a relief and one less worry :)

I hope your vet will consult another more savvy vet. I am pleased that my vet admits her limitations and suggests I seek help elsewhere when it exceeds her knowledge. That way I don't waste valuable time trying things that probably won't work!

Sending you soothing and calming vibes

Yes she seems stable, I stayed up until nearly 1am and she was nice and active then. She's always been a real night owl! This morning when she is resting she seems to be ok, the other day her head was also moving when she was breathing (if that makes sense?) but today it doesn't seem to be so that's good.
You are right about the anxiety, I've never had anything like it like I have with these girls. All my past bunnies had relatively short illnesses/no warning with the end of their lives, but with Frankie having pretty much an early diagnosis and then a fairly slow decline all while we knew what was happening has scarred me for life really.
The animal hospital we were referred to with Frankie were so good with her so it's nice to know they will send us there if they have too.

Thank you for the vibes :) We don't have one but the heater is on permanently now, just on a low level and the air is so much better than those days where the weather suddenly changed and caught me out!

Thank you, I feel so much better than this time a few days ago. A bit better placed to tackle whatever is ahead now I know it isn't an exact carbon copy of Frankie. Honestly it's been one of those times where everything is a whirlwind and happening at once, that night we were PM'ing I honestly couldn't make it up  whatever was up with my daughter has completely disappeared as quick as it started, no other symptoms. Still arguing with her dad all the time though, he really can't see that his tactics with her do not work! Grrr. Anyway, thank you for keeping me company that night! xxx

Aaaww it was my absolutely pleasure :D

Keep me updated how things go. You can PM me any time with questions if it's easier.

How are things today? x

She is much the same, no one would really think there is anything wrong with her if they looked at her and didn't know her like I do, which is how Frankie was for the most of her illness. I don't think she feels unwell which is the best we can hope for. She is still letting me catch her straight away for her medicine, I almost wish she'd fight being picked up so I know she is behaving normally! and I can hear she is still ever so slightly more noisy when doing the stressed 'oh **** I've been picked up by a human' breathing. She always has done that and it is only the smallest fraction noisier.

She is being so good taking the Metacam, I have tried to get my son to take a video but it didn't come out well, but she sometimes just licks it off the end of the syringe

Ah bless her with the Metacam  One small mercy at least :D

It's a really good thing you are so tuned into her, so you can spot any little nuance of a change in her behaviour. Do you think the Metacam is making a difference? xx

I think it's a double edged sword sometimes though as the slightest change any of them do sends me into a worry!

I'm not sure the Metacam is doing anything, she potentially only has a couple of days left with it so it will be interesting to see what she is like without it. Hopefully it is doing something! I kind of hope the vet will prescribe an antibiotic to see if that makes a difference. Hmm, she's a bit of a mystery this bunny!
