Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering

Hi I'm new to this forum! :)

In a few months we are going to be getting two baby rabbits from a mini lop breeder.

We were hoping to go for one male and one female(?) We'd get the rabbits neutered obviously whatever genders we go for but I have a few questions...

1. What age is it recommended for males to be done? Same with females (which I've gathered is 6 months).
2. How long after the op do the males remain fertile? I mean are they like guinea pigs which can still reproduce for 6 weeks after?
3. Would I have to separate the pair whilst one is neutered?
4. What age can females become pregnant? Could I get the male neutered before this time?
5. Any other useful tips!

Many thanks,
Excited future bunny owner!

Hello

Bucks can be neutered as soon as their testicles descend which is usually at about 12-14 weeks of age.

Does can be spayed at 6 months of age. Some Vets will do so even sooner, even as young as 4 months. But it has been found that Does spayed before 6 months are more likely to develop behavioural problems as they grow up. My Rabbit Savvy Vet, who does thousands of Rabbit neuters including all those of the Rabbits at our local Rescue, will now not spay a Doe younger than 6 months of age except in exceptional circumstances.

Bucks can remain fertile for 4- 6 weeks after castration.

]Note:following castration, the buck may remain fertile for at least four weeks and sometimes longer than this; the buck should be kept apart from any does until six weeks after castration''

Full details here:

Does can become fertile from about 5 months, but personally I would not allow an entire Buck access to an entire Doe after the age of 12 weeks.

and equally important information about vaccinations here:

The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund have a lot more very useful information leaflets so I'd suggest you take a look at the RWAF website and maybe consider joining up too

Good luck with your Rabbits xx
