Cost of overnight stay at the vets

Yeah. He's been poorly for about 2 months now and as lovely as my regular vet is he just wasn't getting any better so we managed to get an emergency appointment yesterday with Molly Varga. He was being treated for EC originally but she doesn't seem to think that it's EC at all. It's more than likely an inner ear infection or some sort of absess behind the eye which will require an operation. It does seem expensive but now we are finally getting some answers so it's worth every penny. He's very poorly though :(
Ahh, that explains the higher prices. When Storm stayed overnight at a specialist vet a couple of weeks ago I do believe it was about £100 per night, but again that wasn't including the medication and nursing which was another £20-£40 depending on how often he needed medicating/ syringe feeding. The X-rays they performed were about £250 for all of them, though CT scans are much much more expensive.

My Bridge Bun Cherry cost £2500 and wasn't insured. I paid the majority of it, with lots of help from wonderful RU members, and am paying the remainder at £10 a month - the same amount I am paying all my creditors. I used to have eleven bunnies but now only have three. It's the unexpected vet bills that stop me adopting any more, although I am seriously considering fostering.

My former vet charged me £100 out of hours fee even though he and his wife (nurse) were still on the premises as it was only just 1830, which would have been the same if it had been at 0300 and they had had to get out of bed and travel to the surgery. I thought that was a bit mean as it really increased the bill.

When I needed an OOH vet urgently as Cherry had broken her leg, I just repeatedly got an answerphone message on their OOH number so I have now changed vets.

If I ever do adopt any more fur babies they will definitely be insured but when I had eleven bunnies and nine cats the premium would have been prohibititive and I was working three jobs so was much better off financially than when I had to reduce my hours (due to illhealth).

I seem to have rambled a bit - sorry.

We have just had a call to say that Pet Plan have approved our direct claim request. What a relief. Hopefully they can fix him up now.
I so very nearly didn't get insurance for them because I've never had to claim on any insurance in the past but I'm so glad that I did now!
She did mention X-rays but said that in his case they didn't want to miss anything and thought it was better to go straight to a CT and at this point I'll do anything because he was less himself everyday and I've been an emotional wreck for two months!

Oh bless you both, hopefully the ball can get rolling now though and you can get him fixed![emoji4]

Just as an aside to this thread, my friend runs a rabbit rescue in town near me. She had a telephone call from a practice she had used in the past asking if she would take in a very young rabbit who had been taken in for treatment after his owners had tried to trim some poo off his bottom and cut his tail off with a pair of scissors! They couldn't or wouldn't pay for treatment/surgery to correct the problem, so would she take him in, otherwise he would be PTS. She was just leaving home to go to work so asked if they would do the surgery and keep him in overnight for my friend to collect him in the morning. She picked him up, paid the bill (which was considerable) and then noticed when she got home they'd charged her £30 for keeping him overnight! Cheeky *******! She rang the surgery and gave them what-for (she's a bit of a Jack Russell) and they refunded the money to her.

Gracious what a story (I was going to say what a tale, but that's a bit insensitive!). How very kind of your friend, and as you say, rather mean of the surgery. I'm surprised that the surgery didn't reduce the bill to costs only, since they made the decision not to PTS the little one.

I hope he's doing well now :D

If the rabbit is referred to a specialist by your 'normal' vet, a consult will be a lot more expensive than if the specialist is the vet your rabbit is registered with.

He had a CT scan which is being sent to scan specialist for interpretation and a camera down his throat. Plus the £135 consult fee. So not bad really, but feels like a lot for three hours in total!
