  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When to clip nails

Bellatrix is now 17 weeks and I haven't clipped her nails yet as they don't look too long but I realised I'm not sure how long is too long? She spends lots of time running on concrete so I assumed this was helping them stay short. Any tips for knowing when they should be cut? Thanks!

Have a look where the 'quick' is. If you can't see it, shine a torch under the nail and you should see it better.

There may be a bit of help here:

Gypsy's need doing badly, i've managed to do 2 nails as didn't feel confident doing it as she was getting ever so stressed. Her breeder is doing it for me next week when i collect Bo-Jangles. xx

Baby Rabbit's nails usually do wear down well, but it's a good idea to get her used to having pedicures. So even if the nails do not actually need cutting it can be beneficial to pretend (to her) that you are doing so. There is some useful advice about nail trimming here:
