  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Psyching myself up to get her spayed...

Pinky&Kief

New Kit
Basically, i think i want to get Kief spayed, for all the usual health reasons and cos i think she'd benefit from a friend eventually :)
Buuutt... I'm terrified, never had to have an animal neutered before as they've usually come to me already done from a rescue. So i guess i'm just looking for a bit of reassurance and that final push to book.

Thanks, Emily

p.s. Since she was found stray i guess there's a chance she is already.. (fingers, toes, eyes, legs crossed)

Get yourself a bunny-savvy vet and she'll be fine :D. Pea is nearly 8 years old and has mild snuffles. She has successfully come through 3 GA's in the last 5 weeks and has been back to bouncing around within 48 hours each time. Of course there's a risk with ANY GA but you can minimise that risk but finding the right team to carry out the procedure.

If you aren't sure how 'savvy' your vet is, ask a few questions. How often they spay female rabbits and if they've experienced any problems/deaths. They should be upfront with you.

If you're happy you've got a good vet, and you've obviously kept buns before, then bite the bullet and book! We're all behind you! If I were you, to reassure myself, I would check on what kind of wound closing the vet uses .. sutures, internal stitches, glue .. and how the vet will ensure a female won't pick open the wound.

Go for it! x

Pretty much this - you could also post on here for recommendations for rabbit-savvy vets if you're unsure.

Good luck!

I felt exactly the same with my girly earlier this year, kept putting it off. Had to do in the end, as she was making her brother miserable with all those female hormones. Did what others have said and asked vet loads of questions, I felt reassured and made sure that this particular one did the op, and you know what, bunny was just fine and pleased to say is now a lot calmer. Go for it :thumb:

Thankyou for the advice and comments guys. I must admit, although i've kept quite a few different animals before i've never been the one responsible for vet treatment(first pet since i moved out of my parents). It didn't actually occur to me that some vets wouldn't be bunny savvy.

I was thinking of talking her to the RSPCA animal hospital in Salford as they do subsidised neutering for pets of students. Has anyone been there?

I'm in a similar position to you, my two bunnies are the first that I've been solely responsible for and it does add a weight to the decisions that you make! And don't worry about not knowing that some vets aren't the best with bunnies - it's not common knowledge unless you're really up on your info.

I haven't been to Salford RSPCA as I'm nowhere near, but it may be worth posting in rabbit chat asking for a 'rabbit savvy vet' in your area if you're not 100% convinced on your vet. Knowing this forum there'll be someone nearby that can recommend a vet that they really trust :thumb:

I personally am nowhere near Manchester but on the topic of rabbit-savvy vets, have you heard of Ashleigh Vets? They're in Chorlton and are rabbit-savvy, according to various forum members. My own vet used to work there :) I don't know how much they cost to spay, so if you're on a budget it might be difficult, but it's always worth going to the best vet you can find as then there's less chance of complications.
