  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My rabbit has 2 thinning patches of fuy on his sides

What's it all about?

It's not bald, he's a black bunny and has 2 grey patches on his sides near his head. I think the grey hair is the fur that's normally underneath the black fur.

What could be causing this?

Has he been scratching at all? Apart from that, has he come indoors from being outside recently?

Nope, nothing like that.

It's not bald, just grey fur. I thought he might just have grey patches, but on further inspection it appears to be the fur that's underneath his top coat.

Is he molting in an unusual way maybe??

Rabbit fur (in my experience at least) does seem to change colour as they age - hence my white rabit with just a black spot on her nose as a baby who ended up being a mottled white/brown/grey by age 7! Sometimes they do moult in clumps leaving bald patches/different length or colour of fur. Sounds like it's normal to me (as a lay person) if there were increasing bald patches, skin irritation or I was just plain worried then it'd be a trip to the vets.
