Rumour or truth??

Hi Everyone :)

Just a quick question: Is is true that bathing rabbits is dangerous? It's just I have never needed to wash my rabbits Smokey and Bandit as they are very clean and have gorgeous, soft, shiny fur.... but Flopsy is a bit of a mess, and I often put him in a very shallow bath and clean his paws and tail, is this ok? Flopsy doesn't like the bath, but he doesn't really like anything as he has a lot of attitude/character, and he is usually in and out in about 2 minutes. I allow him to sleep in the house overnight to ensure he dries off completely, but someone mentioned to me that it was dangerous :S

Any replies would be appreciated xxx

I think rabbits being wet is dangerous for them in that they can't dry themselves and then cant regulate their temperature. If you're just bathing areas I'd say that was fine, as long as you dry the areas off as well as you can. Not sure about bringing him in overnight if he's an outdoor bunny because of the temperature change.

When you say Flopsy is a bit of a mess, is it it poo stuck to him?

i don't think it is a good idea keeping him in overnight if he is an outdoor bunny. the temperature changes will be too much.

if he needs baths because he has poops stuck to him then you may need to re-adjust his diet, or have a check up for any other problems if it doesn't improve after that.

is he a good hay eater?

Flopsy doesn't have any poo stuck to him or matted in his fur, he just tends to get muddy feet as there has been quite a lot of rain recently, so when he's out in his run, his paws and tail get a bit messy! I will avoid allowing him to stay in overnight from now on then, as I wouldnt want to hurt him in any way. Thanks for your advice :D xx

If he is just muddy, there is no need to bath him - he should clean this off himself really!

If you do bath him though don't put him outside whilst still damp as he'll get very cold very quickly!
