  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Swollen shoulder on one side

Yesterday (Friday) I noticed that the left shoulder of one of my rabbits was very swollen. My wife hadn't noticed it on Thursday when she fed him and played with him, so it must have come on fairly quickly. Here are a couple of pics from today:

The swelling is soft and fairly spherical. It doesn't seem to give him any pain or mobility issues, and he's eating etc as normal. I'm guessing it's a build up of fluid or something similar. He's an outdoor rabbit, fully vaccinated, and hasn't had any health issues that I'm aware of before. I can take him to the vet if necessary, but wanted to know if anyone had any insight on this first.

Thanks in advance.

What gorgeous bunnies. Thats a big swelling isn't it. I've no advice other than to get him to the vets as soon as you're able. hope he gets on ok

Maybe Bursitis. He does need to be seen by a Vet ASAP. Can you contact your Vet now and email the photos to them. The Vet can then give you advice.

Oh they're gorgeous I echo what others have said see if a vet will review the pics for you and give you some guidance of going in or not.

I would err on the side of caution and take them in if a vet won't take a view of the pics.
