  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sudden death

New Kit
Around 9 months ago i bought two dwarf lop eared rabbits, i was assured that they were sisters, however 8 week ago i woke to a little of 8. Two weeks ago one died suddenly with symptoms of illness only showing an hour or so before, and again today another died in the same way. They both seemed to have lost weight over night, they became unstead on their feet until they were unable to walk and then began to have seizures which they died soon after. The other babies seem to be healthy however i have noticed today one has conjuncitivitis and im wondering if this could be passed on by the ill rabbits that have past away? eventhough they had no signs of this themselves. I am unsure if this is common as i am unable to vist the vets until the morning? is there anyway in which i can prevent this from happening again?

sorry, i don't know. but you've had a hard time. i hope someone will be along soon to give you advice.

I am sorry for your losses

There are many possible causes of sudden death in kits and you really do need to consult a Vet to try to obtain a definitive diagnosis and to try to prevent more losses.

Possibilities include Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC) or a bacterial infection effecting the brain

Sorry for your loss, I have no idea what could've caused the deaths but you mention conjunctivitis and I know Myxomatosis can look like conjunctivitis so I'd take them to the vet asap x
