Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Small tear in rabbit’s skin...help!

Toasty123

Warren Scout
I just noticed what looks like a little tear in Toasty’s skin on the side of his tail under his fur while I was examining why he feels uncomfortable when I hold him😔 (he twists his body to the other side). Can i have some advice on what to do please. Can I put sudocrem on it? I uploaded pictures so you can see what i mean also if anyone has any advice on cleaning his tail. I currently clean it with a damp cloth, but it’s still hard to get the urine out of the fur sometimes.

I would just bathe it with sterile saline. Personally I do not like to use sudocrem as the Rabbit usually licks it off. Ingesting a lot of it may not be too good. It may be a good idea to ask the Vet to shave Toasty's undercarriage as that should help to keep his skin clean. I would not try to do it yourself though, Toasty may need some light sedation to do a proper job.

Back in October the last vet shaved it while I held him and sprayed some antibacterial stuff on it. He was alright after that, although I do wonder if the urine caused the cut or just me while i was cleaning his bum with a wet cloth. Just recently the problem came back :?. I guess it's just something that i'll have to do for him every 2 months maybe, so he can live a comfortable life as he does dribble on himself sometimes, although he was on baytril for about 10 days back in October and the vet said the urinalysis was normal and nothing to be concerned about, although she didn't give me any results.

I hope he will be okay.Bunny skin is so fragile.I used to have to clean my bridge girl Cleo at times ( sticky poos).Just very gently with cotton wool balls and warm water.

Deem means to 'consider' :)

James is from the USA and some treatments that can be bought without prescription over there are not available off prescription over here. Betadine can be obtained, but it does not contain an abx and personally I would not use it in such a sensitive area without first consulting your Vet.

I am assuming that Toasty's incontinence is related to his arthritis ?? Has the Ver ruled out bladder sludge/stones ? You may already have said in another thread ??

Thanks for explaining Jane, I guess another vet visit is in order. As with his incontinence it's very hard to rule out what the cause is without doing a blood test i guess, the vet tried taking his blood when I had dropped him off and told me it was not possible with him conscious, unfortunately :(. Do you know if a light sedation would be okay to do an x-ray or do they need the rabbit to be lying down to do it? The risk of sedation is putting me off at the moment but I feel like I may need to consider it, I've noticed his behavior has changed after the vets, he appears to just crouch in one corner of his bed and put his chin on the rim of the bed and dose off with his eyes open most of the time, but in a hunched position and then when he moves he wobbles. When I come over to him it's like he wakes up and comes over to me. He still gets excited when I bring over his favorite fruit and runs after me and his leg/feet appear to be normal again, but then i guess that could be due to the adrenaline/ I have not seen a vet do a physical examination for bladder sludge/stones, although I will ask when I take Toasty again to the vet.

one of my bunnies has recently had 2 lots of bloods and an xray - he didn't need sedation for either. We were checking his abdominal area . His partner has arthritis & my vet said to do xrays she would need sedation (small amount of GA). I think the need for sedation or not depends on what the vet is looking for & how clear the images need to be. Taking blood involves going in to the vein in his ear so I guess if your rabbit was very agitated it might be difficult to do but I think a bunny burrito could help with this. Have a chat with your vet & express you concerns about GA. I'd recommend bloods prior to any GA though as GA in a rabbit with kidney failure (such as my boy) should only be done when absolutely necessary - eg life saving stuff.

dear toasty,-should be able to aquire antibiotic ointment-from grocery store[infant section]-pharmacy,animal supply, pet smart,etc.- and perhaps bactine -[antibiotic,and it has pain relief,also],-and keep the tail area dry.-as far as the dvm, most often people aquire a rabbit without insight to exotic dvm,and there are not enough of them.-so the problem starts when the bunz is ill-,some dvm,s can treat a rabbit, but my experience is always take a rabbit to an exotic dvm,--so if you deam the your dvm knowledgeable.??- [this is all I meant, sorry for the confusion.--sincerely james waller from the other kent-usa
