  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please ALWAYS advocate for your rabbit - Toby's story - update 26/08 post 48

I am disgusted at the vets, can't believe how they treated you. I would be putting in a formal complaint there.

I was told repeatedly to put Sweep to sleep by the hospital (not my normal vet) when he had EC, now a year on he is a very happy, almost normal bunny who is bonded back to Hettie and loves a free range out on the grass. Yes he still has a head tilt but it doesn't affect his quality of life. The vet in the end was almost bullying me into agreeing to a PTS so I stopped going there and nursed him at home. I should really let them know how well he is doing now to prove how wrong they were.

What a precious wee chap! Just look at him go! :D
He moves better than my Mimzy does who has all four on the floor, his EOA and head tilt. (I was also urged by my vet to euthanize my boy, but three years later he's still here.)
Bless you all for helping him out and standing up for him. He is in excellent hands. :) xxxx

Ah he is so cute. I've had the opposite happen to me. Saw numerous vets, Doughnut stayed at a specialists 3 days and then I'd taken her there a couple of more times and I was told she was perfectly fine. I knew she was in pain and was unwell and it was only when I saw another specialist who confirmed she was a very sick rabbit that I was actually believed, by this time I'd spent over £1,000 but I think you know your rabbit and if something is wrong or isn't as wrong as you are lead to believe then stand your ground. It's always worth getting a second opinion or even a fifth one in my case :)

I went through exactly the same with Noodle when she had EC. Had another 2 fun years with the wee poppet & nobody would have questioned her quality of life.

Kavanne, I'm glad you don't have the threats hanging over you & so pleased you took the actions you did to save this bunny. You deserve an apology from that vet. Grrr

He's a gorgeous little bun  so sad that he had such a horrible start, poor boy. Glad he is in safe hands now :) sending lots of vibes for his next steps in life x

I'll be writing my official complaint to the vet and copying in the RCVS. I definitely have at least one ground for complaint with RCVS and that is that the vet should support and facilitate a request I make to seek a second opinion, which they definitely did not do.

What a wonderful little lad. I'm glad that he is now safe and had you to speak up for him and fight his corner.

Small update - the RSPCA called me today and said they will not be pursuing any action against me or Toby

It is good to know they are not having the wool pulled over their eyes by that awful vet.
How is he now that he is getting used to a new home?

We went through this with a very badly abused Mother and Baby bunny, the baby was terribly disabled so damaged inside her bad leg couldn't be taken off. They were taken to see a rabbit specialist and we were told she would be better to be pts but we didn't agree and that baby rabbit who we called Baby Saint went on to be one of the most happiest little bunnies we have ever had, we are so very happy that we went with our gut feeling and gave her and her Mother the chance they deserved. Baby Saint was nearly 6 when she died and her Mother who we lost this month would have been 7 next month .

Rabbit's can do perfectly well on three legs and are as fast as any normal bunny just because they have a leg removed does not mean they have no quality of life...far from it.

Well done to you for fighting for him as I believe you have done the right thing and he is absolutely gorgeous

He's doing very well in his temporary digs! He'll be going to see a specialist and coming back to me next week... Can't wait to have him back!

Well done for standing up for him :) I used to have a tripod bun and he could outrun me! Good luck with the complaint. Sending lots of vibes for Toby xx

Hi all. Tonight Toby and I will be sleeping in style (at a travelodge ) ready for his X Ray tomorrow morning at Cambridge. It has now been mentioned to me the POSSIBILITY of rebreaking the leg and pinning it back to a normal position. Now due to the fact it has been healed for quite sometime it is unlikely he would get his full range of movement back, but if this could be done it would be the best case scenario for him! Please keep everything crossed.

Keeping everything crossed for Toby Xxx
I also didn't know they let rabbits into travelodge, it's good to know

Yes their website says the allow domestic pets (cats and dogs) for a £20 fee, so I called the hotel and asked if that would include a rabbit in a cage and they said yes! So packed the indoor cage and he should be ok for one night. He travels extremely well, I wouldn't do this with any of my other rabbits, I don't think.
