  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pinworms!

Thank you, I don't know if I'm being thick but if it was cecum impaction then I think the treatment is the same as what he's getting now xx

There is other treatment that would be given. As I said, personally I'd discuss it with a qualified Vet. All any of us here can do is offer suggestions :)

You're welcome :)

Yes, I think you have all the meds for that and are keeping a close eye on him. When you took him in for a check the vet would have told you if they felt it was cecal impaction. I would keep going as you are and ring the vet if he doesn't improve and definitely if things get worse xx

Yes will do. She said he felt better than before and his tummy had some fecal pellets in whereas before it was quite empty, a slight bit of gas but not too bad. She said she couldn't feel any blockages so hopefully she felt his cecum too xx

Sorry Jane I'm just getting confused with it all (too much research and not enough sleep!) Thanks for all your messages, I'll see how he does in the next day or two as he seemed more perky today and drinking more xx

No problem, hopefully he will improve over the weekend :)

Well that sounds like a very good report from your vet :thumb:

It's easy to feel bombarded with info and then (as with us humans) imagine your rabbit has loads of extra things going on. I would keep focussed on the positive improvements he's made and build on those.

Your vet is only a phone call away and they sound very attentive.

Good luck. Post or PM any time :D

Hi all

I was just sitting next to my year old female Rex bunny out on our lawn, and I could suddenly hear her stomach gurgling (which started to make me feel anxious as we have been through GI stasis with her last year, but she has been fine since). She is acting perfectly normally now. Anyway, she then did 2 poos and of course I looked at them to see they were normal shape and size and then I noticed IT!!! A little white thing on her poo, I touched it gently and it started to move (gross!!!). I've identified it as a pinworm.

Is there something I can buy to give her, or does she need a vet trip (which I am very worried about doing in this hot weather and stressing her out). She's totally fine in herself. Her and her buddy have clean, spacious accommodation (shed and connecting run 24/7) and spend a lot of the day and evening loose in our garden, and are healthy, happy rabbits!!

Opinions please!

Thanks
Jo

I apologise that your thread became a bit derailed Jo. I hope you feel that your question was answered sufficiently :)

If the vets seen your bun recently and the only change is you've spotted a pin worm then they may well do a consult over the phone. They are usually quite understanding about stressful trips especially in hot weather. If they've seen a bun already they can also prescribe things for you to pick up so don't feel the only way to talk to a vet is you have to take your bun in :)

That's what I was trying to say !!

Thanks for all your replies. The Panacur has arrived for both my rabbits and I will do my best to get that into them! (Wish me luck lol!)

I've been looking on the net about pinworms and it seems they are quite common in rabbits, but people just don't know it. They can cause all sorts of problems if left untreated long-term, but when bun passes away a post-mortem isn't done so they aren't discovered as the initial culprit :(

I've realised where they came from, I had been putting a swede out for them to munch on in the garden and often giving them a 'picnic' outside (God knows why I was doing that as there is plenty of grass lol!)....and I'd started to see slugs and snails appearing (where pinworm can be picked up from). I saw a large slug on their swede the other day and nearly had a fit and threw it straight in the bin. I'm sure this is where the problem has come from, so NO MORE PICNICS for them!

Thanks again,
Jo

Good on you Jo :D

At least it's only a nine day course for pin worms. Good luck with it!
