  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Our rabbit has joint problem

andrewst

New Kit
Hello, our rabbit is 11 years old. And he started to stretch his back leg forward and is resting in that position. We saw that his one nail skin was swelling, because some months ago he broke his nail. We decided to bring him to VET because of strange back leg position.

VET told that this is not nail problem, she was checking his back legs how it moves etc, and told us that it maybe joint problem, any medicaments were not given because she had no for rabbits. Her suggestion was to order medicaments for cats to relieve leg pain but to calculate proportion as rabbit is way smaller than cat.

After VET we came home and now 2 day our rabbit is resting in the same position and even not going to drink water or eat something, because I guess of pain in legs, so we are giving to him water and food. His nutrition is normal, he drinks and eats food as normal. We live in Lithuania and we can't find good VET which is specialised on rabbits.

Maybe I could find here help, first what medicaments to give to take off leg pain. Or from what we should start? Sorry for bad english, I hope you will understand our problem.

I am sorry your rabbit has this problem. It sounds like he has become Arthritic and needs Metacam. Do you know how much he weighs as someone will be able to calculate the dose he needs.

Thanks Tony for reply. Do we need to use any supplements for better joint movements? I guess metacam is just to relieve the pain it will not solve the problem correct? Does metacam is safe for rabbits? About weight we will check tomorrow and will let you know.

I'm from Lithuania too. Which city are you from exactly? You need to get him to another vet for sure. Maybe I could help you find one.
