Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Optivet- Eye update Dec 21

Thankyou for sharing the photos. It’s good to see that her eye is improving. Sending lots of vibes that it will continue to improve. Hopefully the overgrooming will settle once her eye is better.

I think to break the over grooming habit a period of separation may be needed. Does Zigzag groom her eyes a lot too ?

Yes he grooms her eyes a lot. Fur is missing around the eyes. How long do you think they would they need to be split up for? I’d be slightly scared they wouldn’t bond again!

I think he’d groom her until she was bald if he could have his way!!

Thank you for all the lovely comments everyone. It’s so nice to see that she’s getting better.

I suspect the eye grooming may play a part in the delay in healing. You could try only having them together when supervised so you can stop him licking her eyes.

I have suspected that he could be making things worse. It’s really hard trying to stop him because he does it so often, and unfortunately we can’t always watch him when we are around.

I will try though :p

We spoke to the ophthalmologist today, and unfortunately it looks like Winnie will always have some discolouration on her left eye. The main thing is that she’s comfortable.

The ophthalmologist also said it’s the worst case of eosinophilic keratitis she’s ever seen a rabbit have, which is sad.

Zigs continues to overgroom, and it’s difficult to constantly separate as we can’t always be around them.

But on the positive side, she’s a lot better than she was, I just wish she’d been treated earlier by a specialist (ok so that’s positive and negative!!)

I have just read through your thread and I am glad you managed to get some answers with the ophthalmologist. She's a beautiful bunny

Thank you all! I think she’s beautiful too. She eats like a horse, and is a greedy rex, she loves food so I think she’s happy.

She is so lovely, I do hope that her eye continues to improve and the overgrooming finds a solution.

I am glad Winnie is comfortable. Sending vibes her eye will remain as comfortable as she is in the hugger bed.

We are going back to Optivet next week as Winnie’s eye has got worse again and she needs a biopsy. Can anyone advise on how a biopsy is conducted?

We love Winnie loads, and it’s so sad to see her eyes flare up every 2 months. It’s also really hard to manage. She has about 5-8 eye issues in both eyes, poor love.

Thank you Jane, it’s her upper eyelid- the inner bit. I’ll post a photo- it’s not particularly pleasant. She’s basically got discharge stuck to her inner upper eyelid, that won’t shift

The Vet will probably have to scrape a few cells off from the effected area.

Thank you, I was wondering whether they would put her under. That’s reassured me.

Latest photos of her eyes, apologies these are unpleasant. And one photo of Winnie begging for food.

Despite having some type of growth (it’s like discharge) on her eyelid, she’s acting completely normally. Just to note that she has significant damage on her lower eyelid and upper eyelid due to previous issues.
