Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
Thank you everyone What do you think our options are with an abscess in the duct? She's not had isathal, we went straight for what we thought was more 'stronger' stuff with maxitrol then tiacil, tiacil is quite runny isn't
it
I can’t remember where I read that for infections in the actual duct Isathal works better. I could be wrong though.
IME surgery is usually required if there is an abscess within the duct.
Thank you She is luckily, she has her meds out on the landing where there's better lighting and has become more confident out of the bunny room, before she wouldn't really venture out but now after meds will hop into our bedroom or the spare room. Unfortunately Jake follows and while I was watching fern chewed through my hair dryer  He has gone through many chargers/hair dryers in his time! He then took the baytril syringe and was actually enjoying licking the baytril, Fern is a normal rabbit and hates baytril
The specialist has actually asked us to stop all antibiotics so they can do a swab, I hope she doesn't go downhill without them but they haven't seemed to make a difference so far
Thank you, it's not great news sadly. From the X rays her regular vets have done her teeth/roots are perfect, the blockage is elsewhere in the duct not caused by teeth. The vet believes the tear duct is ruptured and pus/swelling has built up behind her eye. She could flush the duct today so it is draining but there's so much build up she couldn't get the contrast through for a contrast X ray. So she's had a swab taken and whilst we wait for results is on Metacam still twice per day, baytril and metronidazole plus eye lubricant to protect her eye as it's protruding. She's back a week on Friday to see if there's any reduction in swelling to do the contrast X ray but the vet thinks ultimately she'll need her eye removing to remove the abscess behind or open up the tear duct and have an open wound to keep it draining.
I got upset as I can't believe after Jasmine this is happening with poor Fern, like I've done something wrong as what are the chances of having another eye problem like this. I told the referral vet about jasmine and the vet said it's not professional but she was getting upset and saying how awful it was and such a misuse of antibiotic, yet the rcvs independent vet thought it was clinically indicated in the complaints process which is so untrue
