Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nail bed infection advice

Molly is approx 6 years old. She was a stray from BARC so it’s just a guesstimate. She started limping before Christmas. Vet diagnosed her with a nail bed infection on her back paw. She was on Baytril and Loxicom for 2 weeks, her toe was really sore, red, inflamed.
It cleared up after the two weeks and all has been good until yesterday. She’s now limping again. The vet said if it didn’t clear up after the Baytril they’d need to remove her toe... I’m back there on Tuesday with a view to leaving her for the op. I’ve seen two separate vets and neither has seen a nail bed infection in a rabbit.

Does anyone have any experience of them? To remove her toe just seems so drastic!

Maybe a longer course of abx is needed ? IE at least 4 weeks. But it the infection is in the bone then it may be a different abx from Baytril, one that has better bone penetration properties.. Toe amputation may sound drastic, but it may be the best option to stop the infection spreading further.

Thanks Jane, can I ask how would the vet work out if its a bone infection? Her toe was still inflamed when she was taken off the meds but the vet thought it was scar tissue. She was talking about the possibility of it being more than an infection, some kind of tumour and figured toe removal would eradicate any further complications..? bless her
