My local Pets at Home....

Last time I popped in P@H to look at the bunnies a lady and her children were buying a bun, the P@H man sat them down with the bun on his lap and must have been chatting to them for about 20mins. I didn't want to stand to close to be nosy but I heard him saying rabbits may not take too kindly to being picked up and cuddled, how they like to live in pairs, must be neutered and vac and explained why. Had to walk away at that point but when walking back past he was talking and showing them how to check for fly strike! I was quite impressed

:D Loving the covert store surveillance: all in the name of rabbit welfare!

I was in my local P@H today to get some more hay for my boys and I saw the three hop rule stuck on one of the hutches outside. I was in a hurry so I didn't get chance to go around the hutches as normal to inspect but I will next time. I think it's good they're making progress. Even little bits is better than nothing IMO :thumb:

does anyone know the PAH cage/housing cleaning policies for all the animals?
am just wondering as have seen some housing areas looking and smelling very questionable but am not sure if am just an obsessively clean person [when it comes to animals anyway] or if they coud be slacking on the cleaning.

however,at least PAH are trying,we need to remember back to what they were like before they changed their UK name; petsmart, they were absolutely brutal to the sick animals and had very little care for animal welfare and their future lives, they sacked the original petsmart staff after the scandal got outed and they reinvented themselves though they never changed their name in america.

have been very impressed with the information have got off some PAH staff, its nice to know when there are actualy real animal lovers working for them rather than people who only got the job because a wage is a wage.

there is one pet shop was recently in,are we allowed to name specific pet shop names here? and it was disgusting for the animals, they sell a lot of exotic animals including marmosets and giant turtles, they even had many puppies for sale to in a surrounded area in the middle of the floor;thought they made selling puppies in petshops illegal years ago?
the rabbits and guinea pigs were all cooped up in tiny little square housing areas, the staff who spoke to us coudnt care less when they were telling us about the rabbits, and because they are also an exotic specialist there was a very high level of heat;tropical like temperatures, the rabbits looked overheated and miserable, there was a regular fan in the room but it was just pushing around hot air.

Are you talking about a certain reptile shop in Manchester? I've never been, I heard of it a few months ago & really wanted to go as I love snakes and they apparently have some really cool stuff. Then I liked them on fb and have been shocked at some of the things I've seen and the final straw last night when they were selling kittens. I unliked them after that, I didn't even know you could sell kittens in a pet shop these days! I won't be paying them a visit now.

yes thats the one! in longsight.
they have a gorgeous white giant bun [size of a dog, sorry am not familiar with the breed names] running around the shop at his own pleasure but the door is open and there are kids who just paw at him so he gets stressed and runs around.

they didnt have kittens in at the time we went so they must have sold the jack russels and yorkshire terrier pups and put the kittens in the enclosure, totaly agreed- honestly thought it was made illegal to sell kittens and puppies in petshops.
the marmosets are in tiny cages and look miserable, and the enclosure they have for the giant turtles is tiny.
theyre selling a pair of marmosets for one thousand pound odd-any random person who doesnt know a thing about exotics can iresponsibly buy them.

woud recommend a visit if only to see it for self.
am thinking of reporting them, but have reported animals in distress before and the RSPCA dont seem to care unless they see physical signs of suffering,as in being emaciated or injured for example.
