  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Injecting Bunnies...help!

if you are giving Pen G which is from the fridge, make sure you let it warm up for 15 min. before inject inside her
skin. One of the tech. taught me this trick as it's too cold to go inside the skin, the bun doesn't feel comfy.

For the other people reading this thread Note: Pen G CANNOT BE GIVEN THRU THE MONTH, THE RABBIT WILL DIE IF GIVEN ORALLY, IT MUST BE GIVEN UNDER THE SKIN

The absolute best spot is the loose skin just behind the neck. See diagram

it's a very simple task:

1) You hold down the bun
2) lift the loose fur 2 inch from the back of his neck, now you form that empty air "pocket" from the diagram above
3) push the needle in, if it's a small bun, push in approx. just over 0.5 inch

How did her injection go today :D:wave:

Well I put food in front of her but she still made it awkward for me....I changed the needle this time too but she is just getting so tense ,it took me 2 goes this time but it was easier than the previous jab had been if that makes sense!

Thanks for asking!

I had the same problem w/ Penicillin G, I notice the needle they pre-measure and gave me is not big enough, so I ask them to swap me the ones w/ bigger gauge. Because w/ smaller gauge, whether apply to human or animal, the white liquid is so thick that it jams at the hole, in the end, it's useless. With the needle hole bigger, the liquid goes in nicely.

There's obviously tons of great advice here already! I just wanted to add that while I have never given injections myself, I've heard it helps to imagine a clock where you are injecting. Do one injection at the 12 noon mark, then at 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock and so on. If you keep track of that, you'll be less likely to hit the same mark twice, and then at least bunny will be a bit less sore.

Hope that helps the little Angel! :)
