  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

One of my two bunnies has been diagnosed with an 'infection' by my vet but cannot work out what kind. Her major symptom is lost appetite and then a little lethargic, apart from this no other symptoms. Her teeth are fine, no GI stasis due to administered liquid food given six times daily. She is on antibiotics and metacam. I tempt her with her favourite herbs and grass, she runs to them but then turns away. Flower has been like this for five days now and we are so worried. Has anybody any ideas of what this could be?

Have you noticed whether she has any problems weeing? Has the vet tested for a UTI?

Did your vet take her temperature? You say she's on liquid food - has this been for five days now?

Vets are unable to check a rabbit's back teeth successfully unless they do 'conscious dentals' where they can access the whole mouth. It's possible there's something going on dentally to prevent her eating. It could also be something like a urinary tract infection and the vet could do a dipstick test. You would have to obtain a sample, by giving her a clean litter tray with only hay, and then when she pees scooping it up into a clean syringe or putting it into a clean jar.

How long has she been on antibiotics?

If she doesn't improve I would suggest further diagnostics, eg a full blood profile.

Good luck with her x

I would suggest that you take Flower back to the Vet to be re-examined. It may be that she does have some problems with her molar teeth (cheek teeth) that are not visible from an examination done whilst she is awake.

Has the Vet suggested running further diagnostics to try to identify the primary cause of her anorexia and lethargy. As Babsie mentioned, has Flower been spayed and is she fully up to date with both of her vaccinations- ie the Nobivac Myxo-RHD and either Flavac or Eravac (to give protection against RHD2).

Personally I would give the Vet a call now and request another appointment for Flower for this afternoon. 'Not eating and lethargy' are symptoms which can be seen in numerous disease processes in Rabbits and it would seem that it is now necessary to run some diagnostics given that Flower is not improving at all after 5 days of treatment for a non specific 'infection'.

These links contain a lot of information, some of which may not be relevant as far as Flower is concerned. But they may be worth taking a look at to give you a bit more insight into what to expect from your Vet now

I forgot to say welcome to the Forum, and if she persists in not eating, you may find some useful info here:
