  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I feel I'm losing cookie. E.C much worse today!

Vibes for Cookie....

Just had to also mention how fantastic you guys are on here - with so much medical knowledge and offer of support...just amazing you really all are!

I know we only started his medication yesterday late afternoon but this morning the head tilt is really bad :cry:
He's so confused and doesn't know whats happening. Its like the head tilt is pulling him over and he cannot walk
He is still eating but we are having to hold him when he does.. His head tilt was slight yesterday but so much worse this morning. All me and hubby have done this morning is cry.

I've only just seen this. Sending Cookie lots of vibes. Is your vet open where you could ask them for any further advice?

If not, you could always try to call Chester Gates and ask to speak to Martin if he is around today as he is exotic specialist there (I think Jenny may also be one but not 100% sure)

It can get much worse in the initial stages, including the Bun actually rolling due to the dizziness.

What dose of Metacam are you giving ?

Sometimes an anti-motion sickness med such as Stemetil can help with the dizziness.

I am sorry Cookie is worse today. I have read lots of threads on EC on here and as Jane says, they do seem to get worse before better.

Sending get well vibes for Cookie xxx

I have just seen this thread, I have dealt with two buns with EC.

They can get worse (muh worse) before it gets better. It is a tough struggle to help them through this, but it can have a positive outcome.

I've looked at the box and it's cat Metacam and been told to give him 1kg dose per day. Very hard to work out the dose because with it being in the bottle it's in I can get it in the syringe.
My bill said 15 ml but the bottle I've been given is only a 3ml, that's not going to last 7 days.

Phone your vet and query the size of the bottle as you've been charged for the 15ml. They may have just made a mistake. You could ask your vet to give you the dosage in drops, if that would make life easier. I've only had experience with dog metacam so can't really advise you on dosage, I don't know whether it's different or not.

It does get worse before it gets better, one of my buns with EC got to the rolling stage before she started to improve. As he cannot walk he might find it more comfortable to be propped up with rolled towels. How is he with passing droppings and urinating?

Here is a good thread from a while back about EC, it covers a lot of bases so is worth a read. http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=215679 The bunny from this thread recovered from her EC so it shows there is hope.
