  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Heat pad

I feel ok about leaving it on without me in the room for an hour or two, but I personally wouldn’t leave it any longer, although I think it’s safe to do so. The instructions state that it can’t be left on any longer than 24 hours.

My partner has set up a timer socket thing so that it stays on for 45 minutes then goes off for 15 minutes. This could be something you try? I can try to find out more as I’m not very good with that type of thing!

Mine came yesterday (they used Amazon delivery, although it wasn't bought via Amazon). I've used them before and have had reasons to wish I had one to hand recently for pets recovering from GAs, and for older cats generally. I've not had an issue leaving them on continually for days to weeks, as long as they are carefully positioned so they can't get damaged and they are checked regularly.
Ah, that's good to know!

Oh, I see. I figured that since it's colder at night, it would be nice to have something to leave on during the night, but I can't keep an eye on it then, of course. The timer sounds like a good idea. I have a couple of those, they're very handy. Maybe I'll try that.
