Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dew claw has come off

I found a claw on the floor this morning when I moved a foot stool, so I checked both Lilac and Rupert and found that it's Rupert's dew claw. There was no blood on the claw, and it was hollow at one end where the quick would've been. There's no blood on him, I can feel a tiny little nub where the claw was but can't really see very well as there's so much fur around it. It hasn't been bothering him, and because it was underneath the foot stool I don't know how recently it's come out. Having never experienced a nail falling out before, do I need to worry or just keep an eye on him?

Just keep an eye on it since not bleeding and may have already begun to heal. Trim nails if getting long.

Thanks all, they were due a trim so I did it this morning when I was checking to see who's nail it was that had come out! I had a bit of a panic as my parents' dog pulled a nail out and then a few months later they found an infection had got in there and he had to have his whole toe amputated, so I'm super paranoid now that the same will happen even though its totally different circumstances.

Ah thanks for this. It certainly doesn't seem to be bothering him, he's still running round like a lunatic! If I hadn't moved the foot stool today I wouldn't have even found it, but at least I know he seems to be fine.
