  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bulging eyes

Hi our vet thinks our Milly Probley has a Thomas.Milly is almost 10 and I noticed her eyes bulging several months back. After antibiotics her eyes seemed ok.Then Milly had jelly like poop which was treated and now her eyes are beginning to bulge again . She has off days where she won’t eat but normally after force feeding and extra water she is fine by evening time. She has been on metacam for her spine Probley a year or so.She is tiny only couple pounds so vet doesn’t want to do any procedures as Milly is too delicate.Milly is also staying on gut meds for as long as she has left as the jelly poop returned after finishing course. What I wish to ask is how will I know when she is ready to go? Vet says she is chesty so I’m worried it will be her breathing xx

Hello

I think you mean she probably has a Thymoma.

Judging quality of life is not something that anyone can do unless they are the main care giver and/ or the Veterinary Professional treating the Rabbit. I always believe that it is ‘better’ to let the Rabbit go a day too soon than a day too late. The decision is never easy though.

I have cared for a few older Rabbits diagnosed with a Thymoma. All were not candidates for surgery, they were given palliative care which included the use of a Corticosteroid to try to reduce the size of the Thymoma, thus reducing the symptoms. The use of corticosteroids in Rabbits is not something to be done without a lot of weighing up of risks v benefits. Rabbits are especially sensitive to the possible adverse side effects of corticosteroids. But when in the Last Chance Saloon and the only other option is PTS I personally feel the risk is one worth taking. It has been the case in all the effected Rabbits I have cared for.
