Best toys for bunnies

I am looking for new ideas for toys and boredom breakers for Mischief and Lillabelle and remember having this discussion before and somebody suggested this could be a topic. So I thought I would start one [emoji4]

If anybody has good ideas for toys be they homemade or shop bought I would love to hear them. I'm looking for all sorts of ideas that will keep our furry friends happy and healthy.

If they are shop bought then if you can remember where you got them from or a link to the product that would be a great help but if not just give best details you can so that we can search for products on that theme.

If they are homemade then any details on how you made them would be great.

So please feel free to add your thoughts. Thank you [emoji235][emoji195]

Small plastic plant pots are good for chucking around
Big teracotta pots full of hay are good for sitting in
Branches (apple, willow, etc) - hang up just above head height so bunny can stretch up and nibble the leaves
Boxes or paper bags filled with hay and some treats (pellets, forage, dry flowers, etc) to rummage in, eat and generally destroy.

Cookie loves hay ball and Amazon papers the most. :D There are papers that come out of the Amazon shipping box, I'm talking about that, I keep them for Cookie, he plays all the time. :) He used to play with his ball a lot, now he doesn't, now he plays with a balloon. :D He also has a cat tunnel, sometimes he has fun with it. :)

When I had bunnies, I used to buy them apple sticks from Fluffers on here. They loved them. Chill and chew mats and willow tunnels went down well too.

Yes, how did I forget that. Apple sticks are the most precious, they love them so much :D

I think toys involving food are always good. Most bunnies I've known like treat balls. With Mischief and Lillabelle being so big, dog ones would probably be best? I have this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-Dog-Activity-Snack-Ball/dp/B000QC785C

But any ball will do, really, as long as it's made of hard plastic, and not something soft like rubber. The Bob-a-Lot is great, too: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Starmark-Bob-Lot-Interactive-Large/dp/B001JQLNB4

61Opi47sLCL._AC_SL500_.jpg

Also, I think food trees are great, but I think basically every single bunny one on the market would be quite small for your bunnies? Like, this one: https://www.hugglepets.co.uk/product/trixie-duo-feed-tree/

Trixie-Duo-Feed-Tree.jpg

is only 34cm high. That wouldn't be much of a challenge, probably... I did see a children's Christmas tree the other day that I thought would work well as a bunny toy. I'll see if I can find a UK shop that sells it... Here: https://www.packlinq.co.uk/christmas-tree-h-60-cm-w-40-5-cm-pine-1pc.html

You could use it to hang veggies on, and it's 60 cm high, so a bit taller than most bunny food trees. You'd just have make the base a bit bigger, probably, or it'd likely fall over with two big bunnies playing with it. ;) Or you could make one yourself, maybe?

Snuffle mats are nice, too, I think. You'll probably want a dog one again, since rabbit ones would be too small, I guess. You have ones with different kind of hiding places, like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Snuffle-Activity-Sniffing-Feeding-Washable/dp/B096M22GBJ/

61S6Qi9czOS._AC_SL5000_.jpg

And ones like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Activity-Sniffing-Enrichment-Interactive-Sunflower/dp/B082PHXFRT/

Amazon is full of lots of different ones.

Also, food puzzles. Simple ones like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Puzzle-Hide-Treats-Interactive-Game/dp/B076HWRB1C/

81KVznsDYbL._AC_SL500_.jpg

And more complicated ones like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-32013-Activity-Poker-Strategy/dp/B009WPTW9E/

61EH2789UqS._AC_SL500_.jpg

Tunnels are fun as well. I guess cat tunnels would be best for Mischief and Lillabelle? I don't think they'd fit through willow tubes... Those are still great to destroy, though. And these, too: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Naturals-Animal-Activity-Rosewood-Products/dp/B002HEG4ES/

I think the 65 x 40 cm ones are the biggest.

What else... Digging boxes are great if they like digging. I have a underbed storage box full of paper that I hide food in, and they like that, and I have another filled with coco coir for them to dig in. Like this kind of stuff: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Komodo-Tropical-Terrain-Compact-Brick/dp/B00393MK9O I use the stuff for reptiles, not for plants, as the ones for plants often have plant food in them.

I'll see if I can think of anything else.

OMG this list is great, if I get there we should definitely make a bunny shopping list with you :D

Such great ideas here thank you!

I use cardboard boxes but did not think of paper bags. That is a good one! I can see them having fun finding all the goodies inside them [emoji3]

I just gave some to Mischief and he is jumping about playing with it. I can hear lots of rustling and tearing paper! [emoji38]

I just thought we could make little parcels using the paper aswell just like the paper bag idea. We could put goodies in them too xx

I intend to buy those when the other apple sticks we have run out thank you for that. You told me about Fluffers recently [emoji4]

I need to get mats aswell. I thought willow mats would be good for Mischief. He is lazy so likes to chew things right in front of him [emoji38]

Mine love them too! I put a small handful of apple twigs on their forage/hay tray in the evening and by the next day they are all gone [emoji3]

Wow! This list is fantastic! [emoji3] Thank you so much. I knew I could count on you for great ideas Reader of Books [emoji6]

They have a little yellow ball that I put nuggets in and they try and get them out. Lillabelle especially loves it! The Bob-a-lot looks great too!

I got the idea of a line and pegs from you and we thought we could fix it across their puppy pen! That way we can adjust the height for Lillabelle as she grows.

(Just to add that I hope this thread will be useful for all bunny owners for ideas so if the toy is more suited to a smaller bun then still feel free to add it on here [emoji6])

The good thing about these toys as you can adapt the idea to suit your bun's size and dexterity and give them their favourite treats.

I love the Xmas tree though! That is definitely a Xmas pressie for them this year me thinks! [emoji3] I think my OH could make them one but the one you have shown is great too.

The snuffle mats are a great idea! Mischief loves his food so I'm sure this will be a success. He is like a labrador bunny cross! [emoji38] I will definitely get one of these.

Yes willow tubes are great. I haven't got one for them yet but they can be stuffed with hay and treats aswell. I will have to get some of these aswell.

The puzzle that Sophie was playing with that I saw on your thread actually inspired me to start this thread! [emoji3] This is top of my list I think. I have coconut shells that Lillabelle loves to play with. I put treats in them and she turns them over to find the treat. She will love the puzzle. And of course Mischief will too being a real foody! [emoji38]

I have a log tunnel but I don't know what size it is. Lilabelle loved it but now it is too small for her to go under but they still like to nibble it.

Funnily enough my OH just found some underbed storage boxes outside! They had been left out for somebody to take. Obviously I will scrub them down but I want to use one at least for a digging box. I didn't think of paper. I was going to use hay but it can be messy. Once they can go in the kitchen I could get some coco-noir aswell and just put it on a blanket for easier clean up [emoji6] The coco-noir will be great for digging which is more like outside and their natural habitat as we don't have a garden [emoji4]

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this fabulous list of toys! I hope it helps others with new ideas for their bunnies aswell xx

I got the idea for amazon papers again from a reader of books. Really having fun with those papers in Cookie :D But the paper noises are really annoying

I'm glad you like the ideas! And I'm glad they enjoy their food ball, and hope they'll enjoy the line and pegs, too! Adjusting the height as Lillabelle grows is a great idea. :D I like your idea of getting the Christmas tree as a Christmas gift for them. And that's so cute that Lillabelle loves to play with her coconut shells when you hide treats under them. I hope they'll like the digging box. To be honest, Sophie and Casper only use their digging boxes if I hide food in them. Casper does like to dig in his flowerpot full of soil outside, though.

Oh tell me about it! I took it off them last night and put it under our desk in the bedroom! This morning they both found it again and I've had to put up with paper noises, banging on the glass tray under the desk from the coconuts and scratching down the side of the chest of drawers!! They are both doing it. And as it is under the desk it is enhancing the sounds due to an echo. It's SO loud! [emoji23][emoji23]

Yep thanks so much for the paper idea Gamze (and Reader of Books). They are really entertained and I have a headache! [emoji23][emoji23] xx

I have to wait until the 1st to order more toys (apparently) [emoji20] but I'm allowed £50 to spend for just toys for them!! I'm so excited and am going to be looking for a puzzle and a snuffle mat today! Plus I will order some of those safe wooden pegs for the line [emoji4] I love shopping for them!

They are like a pair of gangsters going everywhere together today. If one does something the other one seems to be watching and learning and then they do it! The noises they are making! I am looking forward to ordering some of the things you suggested plus a willow mat and tunnel. Mischief loved hos tunnel made of lots of hard sticks woven together (I don't know what it's called) but he ate it [emoji38] I need to get him a new one xx

Actually that's a good point! We have a yard we can use for digging boxes and stuff! We need to cover the roof as there are lots of pidgeons roosting (I mentioned it before) but we want to make it another area for them with pots of flowers to grow and we are looking to grow grass somehow. We want to make up for not having a garden for them. Digging boxes would probably be best kept outside bearing in mind they are big bunnies! However yet more ideas we can use thank you [emoji3]
