  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stemicil? - how much?

Charlie bun is one week into treatment for EC and/or an inner ear infection. In a week he has gone from being on his side all twisted up rolling around to being mostly upright, but with a pronounced head tilt. He's been eating and wanting fuss the whole time so not distressed. However, now he's up and about I think he's feeling a bit yuck, and getting more dizzy than when he was being still. Is this what Stemicil can help him with? If so, do I just get it from the chemist and how much should I give him (he's a fairly diddy bun, about 3.2kg)? Thanks.

Stemetil is a prescription only med and I really would not advise you give Charlie anything similar that can be bought OTC without discussing it with your Vet first.
I found Stemetil to be very helpful when one of my Buns had a nasty middle ear infection that made him feel 'dizzy'. But I obtained it on prescription from my Vet.

Ah, I didn't realise it was regulated, thanks Jane, I'll talk to my vet and see what he thinks. Charlie is currently a day patient with the vets so they can keep an eye on him while I'm at work and give him his injections/panacur. I think they're getting a bit attached to him, and like Steve & I, they're all very proud of him. :D
