  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sticky fur under his chin...

Just out of curiosity, how easy is it for rabbits to clean directly under their lower jaw? Not the chest, or even the neck... basically, the underside of their jaw...

My rabbit, Barney, has had fur feel almost knotted there before. He's a Dutch rabbit, so it's not as if his fur is unusually long. When I first felt this, I freaked and ended up sitting feeling it for ages, before taking a look and seeing it actually WAS just fur, but slightly tangled or something. Anyway, a few weeks later, it had vanished. Recently, due to a very heavy moult, we've been syringing him pineapple juice to help with the build up of fur. And I know the first few times, my mum pushed the syringe down too fast and some dribbled down him (and me). So the other day, I could feel knotted fur again, and it looked slightly yellow... Obviously, I freak and believe it's an abcess. I had a close look yesterday, and no, it's not. It's the fur, not the skin. The yellowish tinge seems to be sticky pineapple juice. I've seen him wash his face, but not under his chin. And the fur is too thin there for me to trim, it's too close to the skin and I wouldn't ever try it.

Have you tried wiping it with a baby wipe? When Smokey had a really large dewlap before she was spayed, that got dirty and Inky didn't always clean it, so I just wiped it with a babywipe.
