  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Also where hes been left in his own urine and poo for ages by his previous owners  hes really sore about his bum :( area ive managed to clean him up but is there anything i can put on him to help heal it up or should i pay a trip to the vets???? hes not in pain because as soon as i put him in his new home he was straight to the food bowl munching like he hadnt been fed in weeks and checking the place out
Any help would be great

You should probably take him to the vets, just to be sure. ^^ Rabbits can hide pain extremely well, if nothing else it must be very uncomfortable for him. And a vet can check to make sure there's no infection... I'm not sure, but I think I've read somewhere that vaseline can be used to act as a protective barrier? But I'd still check with a vet. Good luck!

I agree. A thin layer of vaseline, or even nappyrash cream(sudocream?) which is also very slightly analgesic, on the affected areas will give some soothing protection until you can have him checked over by the vet. It is important to keep on top of areas with urine scald as the skin breaks down so easily and infection can set in rapidly.

I had a conversation with Jane about this today, she swears by Aloe Vera Gel to moisturise the hocks on rabbits, FLAMAZINE Cream is effective in healing up the scabs even if fur does not regrow. Flamazine is a POM so they'd need to take Bun to the Vets for this.

Flamazine is wonderful stuff. My vet gave it to me for Floss's hocks. (sore hocks..the curse of the rex!) and it worked well. It's actually used on Burns' patients(human)
