You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Myxi vaccine

Hi Folks

Can anyone tell me why some vets refuse to put 10% in the base of the ear? My two were done on Saturday but the vet injected the full 100% into the loose skin around their neck. Are they now not fully vaccinated? I intend to complain to the surgery but would like to gather enough information to give to them before doing so.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

As long as 10% of the Vaccine was administered intradermally(by pulling the needle back a bit as the vaccine is given) they will be covered. It is possible to do the intradermal bit in the scruff but it relies on the skill of the Vet. The reason some Vets choose to do the intradermal bit in the base of the ears is because that is where the skin is thickest so it is easier to ensure the needle goes intradermal.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for posting. As far as I could see the vet gave all 100% in one go, ie not pulling the needle back!

Hmmm, well its a very subtle manouvre so you might not actually recognise it happening. I'd just make a polite enquiry with the Vet tomorrow.

Jane, can I ask you if you know the % of buns who are vaccinated but still get myxi?

I am not sure any statistics have been collected :?
I do know that Bunnies who get Myxi despite Vaccination have a chance of survival.

Thanks Jane, I`ll do that tomorrow. I'm just angry because I specifically asked the vet to do it the ear/neck way! He agreed but proceeding to put all 100% in the neck! He was foreign so I'm thinking now that maybe he didn't exactly understand :?

Hi Kayjay.
Floss got nodular myxi despite being vaccinated. The vet noticed it when I took her to see him as I was worried about a swollen eyelid( Talk about blissful ignorance!! ). He put her on a cocktail of stuff immediately as he didn't want to hang about waiting for lab results and she was fine..looked pretty "poxy" for a while but has fully recovered. Thank goodness she'd been vaccinated
