Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

head tilt

Hi, went to a nearby animal sanctuary today to look for a potential partner for my rabbit 'Lily'. They had three rabbits in, one male. He was lovely, but seemed to have a slight head tilt. Didnt get to speak to a staff member as they where very busy. I cant stop thinking about this rabbit, he is called 'Charlie' and i'm going to ring the shelter tomorrow to ask for some more information about him. Can anyone give me information on head tilt i.e causes, is it treatable. I am not 100% sure he even had head tilt  maybe it was just the way he was looking at me, he had one ear upright and one lopped but not all the time.

i have a guinea pig called Lily actually with head tilt she does fine it was cause from over cramping in her first home from a baby till adult before being rescued by Cheryl (SPGrescue) still wonky but does fine.

There are a couple of Causes for head tilt some more seroius than others

it could just be he is a 'helicopter bun' where they can't make up their minds whether to be a lop or not

If it was true Head-tilt then it could have been the result of a middle ear infection, Encephalitizoon Cuniculi or a previous CVA (stroke)
I would advise you establish IF the Bun has a history of any of these conditions. EC or a Pasteurella infection (causing otitis media AKA middle ear disease) may have implications for any Bunny Charlie comes into contact with.
