Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What did the worms look like?

Charlie had worms recently, his were pin worms which are apparently v common and bunnies tend to have them all the time, but if they're feeling run down they can multiply and then when you may see them. I found the worms in charlies poo - opaque white, about 1cm in length, and 1mm wide.

I called my vet, discussed things with him and he sent me some panacur to treat both buns - he wasn't at all concerned that it was urgent (as the buns were still pooing, eating, drinking etc) so he was happy to just put it in the post.

Apparently buns can get them from almost anywhere - the worm eggs can be dormant in the soil, on hay, in veg etc.[/url]

Hiya

Pin Worms seldom cause illness in ADULT rabbits but can cause Enteritis in baby Buns.
I would take your Bun to the Vet who will probably prescribe something like Piperazine or Panacur

Dougal is fine in him self, but what a shock i got last night.

Dougal is not chuffed about going to the vet.
He got an injection of ivermectmin (sorry about the spelling), vet had no clue how to treat worms  .
I've to give a stool sample and I'll get him to order panacur.
Thanx again Jane.

Ermmmmm, according to Frances Harcourt Brown's Textbook of Rabbit Medicine Page 363 'IVERMECTIN IS INEFFECTIVE AGAINST PASSALURUS AMBIGUUS (Pin Worms)

I am NOT a Vet, just quoting from a Rabbit Specialists Veterinary Textbook.....

:? :?

That was all they had, I've to go back with a poo sample (so he can check for eggs, there was no worms in his poo today).
And I will ask him to order panacur.
It wasn't me that took him it was my flat mate.
But the vet didn't know how to treat it. He went for a look and all they had was that ivermectin (again soz about the spelling). And maby they would have to order some in.

But my main question is how did Dougal get worms?
Vet said he could have been born with it.
But I have never noticed them before, also he went for his myxi jab two weeks on monday, could this of caused the worms to get out of control.

Oh no!!!!!!!!!

Got some Formula H today and plan on scrubbing his whole area down.
How can I prevent him getting them again?

Jane you are a wee star, if I could kiss you I would.

Good husbandry, which I am sure you alread have.
If Dougal has access to land that wild Bunnies may use then it is likely that is where he picked them up.

In all the time I've stayed in my house there have never been wild rabbits in the garden.
Never seen their poo or damaged plants.

This is what's bothering me, I have no clue how he got them.
I went ovet it all in my head last night.

I do grow my own raspberries and strawberries so maby it's them.

I think they occur fairly randomely in the soil - kids seem to pick them up all the time just from rummaging around in soil and stuff don't they? I suppose other wildlife could bring eggs in - squirrels, birds dropping stuff in flight, etc etc?

I wouldn't say it was terribly common in bunnies, but I'm not sure how much of that is just because most people don't look that closely so the infection passes unnoticed. Assuming they are the same type of worms found in children, they are very common in the environment.
