Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bun not eating and unhappy

Young Bun
Hi there, I'm after some advice, this morning my usually hungry lively bunny was hunched up in the run, not interested in food or anything else. I've taken him to the vets who think he may have gut problems as there were some rumbling noises when they felt his stomach. He's also a bit dehydrated so has had some fluids by injection and also an antibiotic injection.

I've been advised to check he poos ok and if not to give him a bit of veg oil with a syringe. I've read about pineapple juice as well, on this forum, should I try this as well?

I have 2 bunnies and they are moulting quite a lot at the moment so maybe he has lots of fur in his stomach,,

any advice greatly received, thank you

i am afraid i can't offer any advice but i wish you lots of luch and healing vibes - i am sure some very kind and clever person on here will be able to help you.

pinapple juice can help break down the mucus which binds fur balls so if a rabbit undergoes a heavy molt a small amount daily is benifical.
however you said he's not intrested in food. will he eat anything?
if not you will have to syringe feed him.
has he pased any pellets?

Hello

I am sorry you have a poorly Bunny. I am NOT a vet but cannot understand why your rabbit was not given :
1 PAIN RELIEF
2 If GI obstruction was excluded (as Bun sent home one would HOPE that would be the case) then a gut motility stimulant should have been given
3 Why give ANTIBIOTICS when there is no evidence of infection and when antibiotics can exacerbate a GI problem?

Again I emphasise I am NOT professionally quallified but base my opinion on experience gained fom nursing many poorly Buns.

If your Bun has not eaten or poo'd yet I would contact a Vet (preferably a different one) TONIGHT.
Fluids are very important for your Bun in the meantime so you need to syringe them if Bun is not drinking on their own.

Did the vets give you any syringe food? If he isn't eating then he will need to be syringe fed to keep his gut moving. I'd call the vet (even if it's an emergency 24 hour one) and ask for syringe food if I were you. I hope he is ok. Xx

he's looking better

just a quick update, just checked how he is and he's eating loads of hay and hopping around looking much more lively, thanks for your good wishes

Glad he's feeling better, would keep a close eye on him though, and maybe have a look for a rabbit savvy vet
