Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fast-growing nails

Wise Old Thumper
I had my Rex's nails trimmed at the vets a few weeks ago, & I just took her to be done again. She's a house bunny, loose with one other rabbit for about 12 hours at a time, & the rest of the time in a 2 tiered hutch. The room, she's loose in has a laminate floor, with some carpet down. Should her claws be growing this fast? Is there anything I should be doing to keep them down? At weekends, she goes out in the garden for a bit, where she can run on grass & concrete, but time out there is limited til I find some money & have the garden rabbit proofed!

I think it just shows more on a rex - Tia's nails want cutting again but she has such long fur on her feet you wouldn't notice if you didn't look closely - The outside bunnies are on concrete and have never needed their nails cutting in 6 months.

Here i go with another stupid question

How long should they be, candy wont let anyone touch her feet but I cant see any just looking at them and as she wont let us pick her up we dont have a problem with her scratching us.

You all must read my posts and think that rabbit gets away with murder and you know what..... YOUR RIGHT.

Your rabbits nails need cutting when there visable past the hair line on the foot. They will grow quicky if your rabbit is indoors, plus rex do have slightly longer nails than most rabbits. Also sharper for some reason  . val

As the scars on my arm will prove!!

She's nice now, but I still get her nails done at the vets! :D

Candys nails will have to be done at the vets. When Amy was a baby I couldn't cut her nails, it just went through me, so I had to get my best friend to do it for me, so there's no chance for candy. Vet will be happy thought, the prices they charge....lol

for some reason Niamh's (lionhead x nethy) claws seem to grow much faster than my other bunnies. I have to cut hers every few months where as i don't really have to trim the other rabbits claws at all! :?

Lionhead Nails

My male Lionhead rabbit's nails grow super super fast! I clipped all my rabbit's nails two weeks ago and they all look great except the lionhead, his nails are very very long!! Does anyone have any answers to why his nails grow to fast?

This thread is 14 years old so I have asked for your post to be made into a new thread

The substrate a Rabbit is housed on/exercises on will effect how their nails are worn down.

Ok thanks! All my rabbits have the same housing and schedule, so I think it is just the particular rabbit (Like my nails grow fast for example, but my brother's grow slow!).
