  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi, I posted on another part of the forum about housing. I had rabbits before but I was quite young, was ill-advised by the people I rescued the rabbits from and didn't really care for them properly til the end when I rescued a really poorly bunny.
Anyways, do bunnies need worming? I never god told to by the vets?
How many yearly injections do they need?
How do you check their teeth?
I already have some willow sticks and little accessories from my previous rabbits.

There is a lot of very useful information on the Rabbit Welfare Assosiation and Fund (RWAF) website. I am a bit pushed for time now so rather than list all the answers to your questions I'll leave you to have a browse on here :D

Worming is a personal choice really. Many owners do not worm their rabbits on a regular basis unless they have confirmed e.c. or are showing signs of worms.

Yearly injections are twice a year.
One is a combination vaccination to protect against myxomatosis and RHD, the second is a vaccination against the new strain of RHD - RHD2.

You're able to check their front teeth at home by just gently lifting their lips. The back teeth are a bit harder, but you may be able to get your vaccinations 6 monthly apart, in which case a vet should check their teeth at each appointment. The key is lots of hay to help with teeth ware.

(Recommended diet is 80% hay, 15% fresh veg/forage, 5% pellets (about an eggcup)
