  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When to stop medication for Ileus

Stator

Warren Veteran
I'm getting very confused with different advice from different vets.
When should you stop medication for a rabbit with unexplained (non-obstructive) ileus.

The standard medications are
Zantac
Emeprid
Metacam
Fibreplex

The emergency vet said to stop the zantac when they start eating and stop the emeprid when they start pooing.
Another said to carry on for 4 days
I can't remember what my good vet used to say.

Does anyone know the best advice for the four treatments above?

I've not used Zantac. With the other treatments: I carry on for a few days after normal eating / pooing patterns return - just to make sure they are really OK again. It is difficult to judge if the episode is over until then, in my experience, and stopping too early may be counter-productive.

It totally depends on the individual Rabbit. A decision of when to stop medication needs to be made after an actual 'hands on' examination, including noting gut sounds using a stethoscope. Eating/pooing, or lack of, only gives part of the picture.

So there is not a 'one size fits all', in my experience anyway :)

This is a difficult call I've found, as continuing the meds when the rabbit is eating and pooing has certainly been counterproductive in some instances.

It really is an individual thing, and I've found depends on the sensitivity of the rabbit.

Perhaps consult your vet about your case?
