Is Florette lettuce ok for Sludge bun?

Oliver is a sludge bun and is currently on baytril for a uti and daily metacam. He isn't drinking anywhere near enough and is not fussed on alot of the low calcium veg. He is eatting some romaine which I sever wet although sometimes the wetness puts him off. I tried one type of apple juice in his water but he didn't like it and drank from the plain bowl instead. He is eatting some hay and likes the wee compressed bales. I was wondering if the florette which I gave in the past is ok calcium wise ?, it contains frisee (curly endive) lambs lettuce and radicchio. Since I tightened down on his diet i haven't seen sludge in several days but he is spot peeing and it's quite concentrated. I am giving him the odd syringe of water.

You've mentioned the 'L' word Nicky, which may spark a debate here on RU

Personally - yes it's absolutely fine! The only issue I would have with bagged lettuce is their freshness and what they have been washed in. I buy romaine lettuce but it's so watery anyway I wouldn't bother wetting it.

I always give plain water. I was advised years ago by several 'specialists' that animals are programmed to drink plain water and it's better for them. It's something I agree with.

Am i being simple (probably! ) what L word ??!!

Aw thanks Mighty Max glad to know its ok as he is soo bored of his food poor man. The meds r helping alot but what if he is eatting alot better and no sludge is seen but he is still lifting his tail more often to pee and sometimes pee comes out but sometimes not and sometimesjust a llittle. He does do bladder fludees also. No scalds or wet bum. He had a bladder flush a year ago but do u think other investigation is needed or try and get more greens and water into him first. I wonder if the spotting is more because I took away the litter tray to see what his pee is like ??

Oh u mean lettuce !! I used to give it to the others for years with no issues. I know what u mean about freshness tho. I eat it as well so generally I gave a good sniff and if i wouldn't eat it they don't get it either. I am easy put off.

years back there were posts around about the florette brand bags causing some tummy issues. but lettuces are fine generally, and infact my vet was telling me about them recently whilst we were talking about my guinea pig mollie who has bladder issues. he said they are a good choice of food for bladder piggies and rabbits :)

There was a whole thread here about lettuce

I wonder if your little one has any infection there? I had my bun's wee sent off for culture and sensitivity, to see what the cause of 'spotting' was. Lifting tail to strain just made me think of possible infection. You may have already checked that :)

Other watery and low calcium veg are cucumber and courgette/marrow. Butternut squash (yum) and celery (not so yum ..)

Biscandmatt i read somewhere also about iceberg being particularly beneficial for sludge buns. I know a definately no no generally. Do u give ur sludge buns iceberg ??

Mighty Max vet didn't culture but gave baytril as he wee was smelly when his bladder was expressed. It has helped him quite a bit or maybe it's the daily metacam. But if a culture was needed would him being on baytril not affect this ?? Tried Oliver on cucumber, courgette and butternut squash. Nope didn't like. I know he likes celery but i though it was high in oxalate which I need to avoid also ??

The Baytril sounds like a good idea :thumb:

Celery is only moderately high in oxalic acid, so I wouldn't worry. I just never found it popular with buns. Oliver is an exception bun :D

The culture *could* be done whilst he was on Baytril, and the result would be accurate. But it's expensive and if the Baytril is working, then I would carry on.

mollie (piggy) has a variety of lettuces but not iceberg. i have never asked the vet about it specifically to be honest. mollie has an issue with excess calcium salts and inflammation so not the same issue, but still a bladder one :)

Just out of interest, are you giving your bun tap or bottled water? I live in a hard water area so I started giving my bun bottled water. I spent a lot of time reading the labels in supermarkets and found that Volvic and Waitrose own brand had the lowest calcium content (12 mg per litre). Aqua Pura is 14g per litre, Highland Spring is 40mg/litre and Evian appears to be the highest at 80mg/litre.

Apologies if you already have that covered, just thought it might be useful

Hi scrappy. Yes he is on bottled v water for a couple of years now. Tesco one I found is 10mg per litre. But thanks for suggesting thus as i know others don't tend to think about the water.

I no longer have buns, however I have a garden and grew mixed lettuce varieties all organic,i didn't mind slug holes.Home grown varieties are always "greener" and less watery than shop bought stuff especially "Iceberg" types, tasteless and full of water. Red and green leaved stuff, my late buns loved them all.
