Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Fur loss and hot ears, part of molt?

PippaC

New Kit
Hi!
My lion lop, Rupert, is halfway through a massive molt. I've noticed over the last few days that the fur on his ears has become very very thin and patchy, and now they look pink and almost bald!
He's an albino, so he has very pink skin anyway, so I'm not sure if that's the reason I've noticed the fur loss on his ears more? Has anyone else experienced this with an albino bun?

Hi mane has completely fallen out and he's looking horribly scruffy, so I'm hoping his patchy ears are just part of the molting process? My mini lops are also molting, but it's nothing in comparison to this!

Also, his ears seem very hot to touch. He hasn't been overly scratching them, or acting out of sorts at all- eating and drinking fine & binkying around like normal.

Any advice much appreciated!

I would get the Vet to take a look at him. It may be that he has some infection in his ears, this can cause them to feel hot to touch.A heavy moult can cause a Rabbit to be a bit 'run down' and this can leave them more vulnerable to infections. Better to err on the side of caution as far as ears go, especially in Lop Rabbits.

Good luck xx

It may be worth seeing the vet to check if there's any evidence of fur mites, which can cause the fur to fall out in patches. Also with a white rabbit it's not so easy to spot the 'walking dandruff' which is a sign of mites.

You say that his ears seem very hot - it is certainly worth getting the vet to check in the ears for any infection when you go.

Good luck xx
