  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Old rabbit with enlarged testicle, don't know what to do

I have a rabbit he is really old about 9 10 years old (not exactly sure) and he has an enlarged testicle about the size of an orange slice. So I was wondering what to do. I have been looking on line and it seems like the only option it to get him neutered but I don't if he will survive the surgery if I have it done. I don't want him to suffer but I don't want to loss him either. Please I really need some advise.

A vet checkout would be a good start, not just the testicle but his overall health. Although 9/10 is old it doesn't mean that an operation would kill him. Although you'd want a good rabbit vet, if he's otherwise healthy he'd have a good chance of survival. The vet may suggest a blood test to check his organ function to help predict how he'd react to anaesthetic.

The vet will talk it over with you, for example if its a slow growing benign lump not causing pain then they may advise leaving it, if it's causing pain or will shorten his lifespan dramatically then the risk of an op becomes more worth considering.

Finding out exactly what you are dealing with and discussing his health with the vet should give you much more information to make a decision with :)
