  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cloudy eye

Vet appointment being made for Boris tomorrow but in the mean time any ideas/advise. One of his eyes is cloudy and grey looking. I think I noticed this few weeks back, no where near as bad, hubby said I was imagining it!!! He's a dental bun. Tooth root which can't be pulled due to deformed jaw. It's on the other side though :(

Rabbits can get cataracts just like humans, as they age. A vet can usually diagnose that easily. There is nothing much conventional medicine can do about a cataract.

Another possibility is Uveitis, which can be a side issue of the parasite Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (E.C.)

If the vet thinks it's more than a simple cataract, he may refer you to a specialist who can make a diagnosis, and more importantly, make sure your rabbit isn't in any pain.

Does it look as if it's on the surface of the whole eye or is it only the pupil which is cloudy? If it's the pupil, then it is most likely a cataract, and at age 7 it's unlikely to be EC related (although it's possible). One of my older buns has cataracts in both eyes and he still gets around very well. He has a dazzle reflex so he can see light from dark and he can see movement, but my vet says it must be like looking through a heavily frosted window. He mostly uses his whiskers to navigate his way around and I try not to move things too much so he doesn't bump into stuff. Hope things go well at the vets. x

Yeah just over the pupil. I'm scared about his sight as he sleeps on settee or our bay window seat, don't want him hurting himself jumping up x
