  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nail curved over top of foot

This might sound abit random so sorry!

Rose is one of my mini lops, and we trim her nails ourselves (indoor bunny on carpet, lives with her brother Axl) Whilst trimming them today we noticed that the inner most nail on her left paw had grown and was curved funny (I suspect I may have missed it accidentally when last trimming them as it was longer than all the others). Rather than curving back upon itself so it was on the underneath of her foot it was actually curved over the top of her foot so it rested on the top (does that make sense). I trimmed as much as I could and now it's shorter but what is left appears to be still curving inwards rather than under, so it more towards lying flat on the underside of her foot

None of her other nails do this - so I wondered if it might be due to an altered position of her toe making it grow this way.....any thoughts? She's not been in any pain, binkying and eating with no problem. If we had tried to trim them today we wouldn't have noticed that there was any problem.

Is it worth taking her to the vet to check it's not because of something wrong with her toe?

Nail growth can become distorted when the nail is very overgrown. It can also occur after an injury to the toe. So I would get the Vet to take a look, at the least he/she will probably be able to trim the nail down a bit more and hopefully the regrowth will be self correcting.
